My top 3 Railway alternatives
By Jean-Loup Karst, Co-founder @Secret
Heroku
Heroku is my go-to swap whenever I need an application-based “deploy and scale” flow using Git/Docker deploys and have a single entry point into all logs and SSL. Eco costs $5/month and has explicit sleep behavior (i.e., goes asleep) after thirty minutes of inactivity; it’s suitable for demo environments or small dashboard applications. Basic ($7/month) will stay always on, includes free SSL, and increases the limit from five to ten process types (e.g., web+worker split). Standard-1X ($25/month) is where I enable app metric thresholds with alerting and use Preboot for no downtime deployments.
Firebase
Firebase is what I pick when my “backend” is really Authentication + Firestore + Cloud Functions rather than a long-running container. The Spark plan is no-cost with no payment method, and Blaze keeps Spark’s no-cost quotas while letting usage burst past them. For example, Cloud Functions on Blaze includes a no-cost 2M invocations/month, then bills $0.40 per million, which makes event-driven endpoints easy to budget. I also like that Hosting includes custom domains and SSL on both plans.
AWS Activate
AWS Activate stands out when cost is the blocker more than capability, because the Founders package lists $1,000 in credits and the Portfolio package goes up to $100,000 for provider-backed startups. I tend to pair those credits with container workloads on ECS/EKS and managed data stores like RDS, plus S3 for artifacts. If I want “containers without servers,” Fargate bills for requested vCPU/memory/storage and rounds to the nearest second, which matches spiky workloads better than fixed instances.
