Datadog
If the symptom is an error, but I want all of the details (the "rest of the story") I will use Datadog. I add instrumentation to back-end applications using APM; then I enable RUM in order to make front-end exceptions become Error Tracking issues which are then grouped together and can be filtered based on service, environment, and application versions. Once I have identified the issue(s), I will follow up with traces and logs in order to determine if there was an extremely slow endpoint that occurred due to the bad deploy, etc. I also enjoy how APM pricing is based on the number of APM hosts you have installed ($31 per APM host when you pay annually) and that RUM Measure costs $.18 per 1,000 sessions (month-to-month) and therefore, it is scalable based on your website traffic.
New Relic
I like New Relic when I want a single telemetry lake without counting hosts. Their Free tier includes 100 GB/month ingest plus one full platform user and unlimited basic users for dashboards, queries, and alerts. When I cross the 100 GB cap, ingest stops until I upgrade, which is blunt but predictable. Standard pricing then adds $0.40/GB beyond free, so I track volume closely.
Rollbar
Rollbar is where I go when I mainly need error items and deploy context, not a full observability suite. The Advanced plan adds Adaptive Alerts plus Rollbar Analyze (RQL + Metrics API) and pushes retention up to 180 days. I’ve used it as a lightweight default because the Free plan is $0 forever, and the pricing page calls out 5K occurrences + 1K replays per month.

Why is Datadog a good alternative to Sentry?
Datadog is my pick when an ops/SRE team owns uptime and latency across dozens of services, and devs still want error-level debugging. I can put Infrastructure Monitoring on every VM or Kubernetes node at $15/host/month (annual), then selectively enable APM on only the services that generate the most customer tickets ($31 per APM host/month annual). For frontend-heavy products, I like that Error Tracking is tied into RUM: errors get grouped and can be filtered by service, environment, and application version, which matches how we actually deploy. When I need to justify spend, Datadog’s pricing table is granular enough that I can model more RUM sessions versus more indexed logs instead of renegotiating a new plan. That matters for startups that spike traffic: RUM Measure is per 1,000 sessions ($0.15 annually) and session replay is its own line item, so I can cap replay while keeping baseline RUM for critical user journeys only.
What are the differences between Datadog and Sentry?
Alternatives I’m comparing Sentry against here are LiveSession, Howuku, DeepSource, Datadog, LogRocket, New Relic, Mixpanel, Hotjar, Rollbar, Connecteam, Retrace by netreo, and Veryconnect. With Sentry’s Team plan I’m buying a bundle: $26/month (annual) and quotas like 50k errors, 5GB logs, 5M spans, and 50 session replays. Datadog feels more a la carte: Infrastructure Monitoring starts at $15/host/month (annual), APM is $31 per APM host/month (annual), and RUM Measure is priced per 1,000 sessions ($0.15 annually). Error Tracking itself is separately metered (for example, $25/month for the first 50k errors). On the instrumentation side, Sentry is mostly SDK-first, while Datadog often starts with the Datadog Agent; any host submitting traces counts as one APM host for billing. Functionally, Datadog’s Error Tracking is designed to be fed by RUM, grouped into issues, and sliced by service/env/version before I jump to traces/logs.

Why is New Relic a good alternative to Sentry?
New Relic is the alternative I reach for when I’m monitoring lots of ephemeral compute (Kubernetes, serverless, autoscaled fleets) and I don’t want the bill to jump just because a node count doubled. They’re explicit that they don’t charge per host, and they say unlimited hosts, agents, containers, devices, AWS Fargate tasks, and cloud functions are included at no additional cost. The Free tier is also unusually complete for a small team: 100 GB/month ingest, one full platform user, and unlimited basic users for dashboards, queries, and alerts. In practice I use that to give product managers basic-user access while engineering keeps one full user for deep troubleshooting. When I’m ready to scale, I like the clean data meter: $0.40/GB beyond the free 100 GB. The ingest-stops-at-100-GB behavior forces guardrails early and fits teams that hate surprise overage invoices mid-month as well.
What are the differences between New Relic and Sentry?
With New Relic, I think about two meters: data ingest and user types. The Free edition includes 100 GB/month ingest, one full platform user, and unlimited basic users; it’s explicitly not host-based, and they say unlimited hosts, agents, containers, AWS Fargate tasks, and cloud functions are included at no additional cost. Once I exceed 100 GB, ingest (and access) pauses until I upgrade or the month resets.
