My top 3 Cloudflare alternatives
By Mary O'Brien, Customer Success Manager
Akamai
Akamai is "the tool I reach for" when the goal of a project is "to keep revenue online through an attack." When fronting both an e-commerce checkout and a public-facing API with App & API Protector, I rely upon its protection against OWASP Top 10 threats (e.g., SQL Injection, Cross-Site Scripting) as well as the Behavioral DDoS Engine for Layer 7 (L7) Floods. In addition, I appreciate the fact that it supports SIEM Connectors (I've seen Splunk specifically mentioned). The result is that, while I can continue to monitor my own security posture via my Security Operations Center (SOC), I am alerted by the same data in the place where my SOC monitors. The fully managed/co-managed/self-service support options available are very valuable should I choose not to run all of this myself. Additionally, if DNS is within scope of your organization's security perimeter, then Edge DNS shows up in most real-world deployments.
Google Cloud (GCP)
I like Google Cloud (GCP) when I’m already building on global HTTP(S) load balancing and want CDN controls that feel “API-first.” Cloud CDN invalidations can target URL paths or Cache-Tag headers, and they usually take effect in ~10 seconds. For gated content, signed URLs keep cache hits separate from unsigned traffic. On the security side, Cloud Armor policies can filter by geo, headers, and even ASNs.
Microsoft Azure
Microsoft Azure is the route I take when I need a CDN + security edge that’s tightly wired into Azure networking. Azure Front Door Premium bundles WAF, bot protection, Private Link support for origins, threat-intel integration, and security analytics in the SKU. The pricing model is also explicit: a $35/month base fee for Standard versus $330/month for Premium, before traffic and request charges.
List of Alternatives to Cloudflare
Here are some of Cloudflare's top competitors in the Security category: Akamai, Google Cloud (GCP), Microsoft Azure or DigitalOcean.
Akamai Technologies elevates business performance by optimizing digital experiences through its cutting-edge network services. It specializes in accelerating website and application delivery, ensuring security, and providing superior cloud solutions.

Why is Akamai a good alternative to Cloudflare?
I recommend Akamai when the buyer is a security/ops team that wants the edge vendor to behave like an extension of the SOC. If I’m defending APIs that keep getting hammered, App & API Protector’s explicit OWASP Top 10 focus and its Behavioral DDoS Engine give me a clear “this is what it blocks” story for stakeholders. The SIEM connector angle matters in practice: it calls out Splunk support, so I can route events into existing dashboards and incident workflows instead of living in yet another portal. I also find Akamai easier to justify for orgs that need a managed engagement, fully managed vs co-managed vs self-service are described as distinct options. And if DNS resilience is part of the mandate, Edge DNS appears alongside Kona Site Defender and Bot Manager Premier in customer deployments, which signals it’s not a side feature. That fits big launches where I’d rather buy uptime than build it.

very good experience with ai and virtual machines hope they will continue this legacy the reasons i like it : • Clean UI — compared to AWS, it's significantly less overwhelming for beginners. Things are easier to find. • Cloud Shell — built-in terminal in the browser is genuinely useful, no local setup needed • IAM & permissions — granular and well organized • Logging & monitoring — Cloud Logging and Monitoring dashboards are solid • Free tier — generous enough to learn and experiment

Why is Google Cloud (GCP) a good alternative to Cloudflare?
I like Google Cloud (GCP) as a Cloudflare alternative when the team already lives in GCP and wants the “edge” to be managed through the same IaC and networking primitives. If I’m shipping video or large static assets, Media CDN’s support for HTTP/2 and QUIC from client to edge is a concrete win I can measure in throughput and handshake latency. For access control, signed URLs/signed cookies let me gate content without turning the cache into a security hole, because signed and unsigned responses are cached separately. Operationally, I appreciate Cloud CDN’s invalidation tooling: being able to purge by Cache-Tag and seeing the docs say it takes ~10 seconds is exactly the sort of release hygiene I want. And if security is the driver, Cloud Armor policies for Media CDN can filter by headers, geo, and ASNs, which maps well to “block this ASN” incident playbooks, without custom edge code.

Security & Compliance Visibility with Defender
One thing Azure did well for us was security and compliance. Defender for Cloud and centralized policy controls gave our ops team a clearer view of what was exposed and what needed attention. We also benefited from a startup offer through Joinsecret that covered a good chunk of our early usage, which was helpful while we were still figuring out our baseline spend

Why is Microsoft Azure a good alternative to Cloudflare?
I reach for Microsoft Azure when the constraint is corporate networking, not just caching. If the origin has to stay private, Azure Front Door Premium’s Private Link support lets me keep origins off the public Internet while still serving through a global edge. I also like the SKU packaging: Premium explicitly includes WAF and bot protection, plus threat-intel integration and security analytics, which reduces the number of separate line items I have to explain in a budget review. The base fee difference ($35/month Standard vs $330/month Premium) gives me a predictable “minimum spend” before usage-based charges kick in. Finally, Microsoft’s own guidance that Front Door includes L3/4/7 DDoS protection and bundles WAF with Premium makes it easier to align with compliance checklists that ask, very specifically, “where is DDoS handled?” For teams already standardized on Azure Monitor and resource groups, that operational consistency can outweigh Cloudflare’s more app-platform approach today.
What are the differences between Microsoft Azure and Cloudflare?
Azure Front Door Standard/Premium is the “Azure-native edge” path: Premium is explicitly positioned as Standard plus WAF, bot protection, Private Link origin support, threat-intelligence integration, and security analytics. The pricing page also spells out a base fee of $35/month (Standard) vs $330/month (Premium), then meters data transfer and request volume. Microsoft has also stated that layer 3/4/7 DDoS protection is included with Front Door and that WAF is included at no extra charge with Front Door Premium. Cloudflare, in my experience, behaves more like an all-in-one internet perimeter: Workers run in fast-starting V8 isolates, the WAF includes managed rulesets like OWASP, and DDoS mitigation is described as always-on and unmetered. If I’m serving user uploads, Cloudflare R2’s pricing doc makes “no egress fees” very explicit, and Bot Management claims classification via ML/behavior/fingerprinting. Front Door’s edge caching is also marketed as a way to offload origins during attacks.

Startup-Friendly Speed, Visibility, and Easy Cloning
For a startup environment, DigitalOcean has been a practical choice because it lets us launch quickly and keep costs visible, and the Joinsecret credit gave us a nice cushion early on, but the real value has been the clean interface, dependable Droplets, and how easy it is to clone environments with snapshots

Why is DigitalOcean a good alternative to Cloudflare?
I believe Cloudflare is a good alternative to DigitalOcean for several reasons. Firstly, Cloudflare offers a comprehensive security solution, including DDoS protection, web application firewall, and SSL/TLS encryption, which are crucial for any online business. Secondly, Cloudflare's CDN (Content Delivery Network) is one of the best in the market, ensuring fast and reliable content delivery to users worldwide. Thirdly, Cloudflare provides a free plan that includes most of its essential features, making it an affordable choice for startups and small businesses. Lastly, Cloudflare's user-friendly interface and extensive documentation make it easy even for non-technical users to set up and manage their services. While DigitalOcean also offers high-quality services, I find that Cloudflare's focus on security, performance, affordability, and ease of use makes it a compelling alternative.
What are the differences between DigitalOcean and Cloudflare?
I have found that Cloudflare and DigitalOcean are two different types of services, each with its own unique offerings. Cloudflare is primarily a Content Delivery Network (CDN) and security company. It provides services like DDoS protection, Internet security, and distributed domain name server services. On the other hand, DigitalOcean is an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provider. It offers scalable compute platforms with add-on storage, security, and monitoring capabilities.
While Cloudflare focuses on optimizing website performance and protecting it from various threats, DigitalOcean provides the infrastructure to host the website or application itself. In essence, you could use DigitalOcean to host your website and then use Cloudflare to protect and optimize it. Therefore, they are not direct competitors but rather complementary services in the web hosting and performance space.

EU Hosting Value with Terraform & Failover IPs
We chose OVHcloud partly for European hosting and partly for cost control, and both have held up. The API is decent, Terraform integration was good enough for our setup, and failover IP features were useful during a migration. It is not a beginner-first platform, but for a team with some ops experience it offers good value

We now block unmanaged laptops automatically, which became really important once employees started working more frequently from personal devices.

Why is WebTitan a good alternative to Cloudflare?
I believe WebTitan is a good alternative to Cloudflare because of its robust security features and competitive pricing. It provides advanced web filtering and malware protection, which are critical in this age of increasing cyber threats. WebTitan's interface is user-friendly, making it easier to manage and monitor network activities. It also offers flexible deployment options, such as on-premises, cloud, and hybrid solutions, which can cater to different business needs. Furthermore, WebTitan provides excellent customer support, assisting users promptly and professionally. While Cloudflare is a great service, it can be expensive for small businesses. WebTitan’s pricing model is more affordable and scalable, making it an attractive option for businesses of all sizes. So if you're looking for a cost-effective solution with strong security features, WebTitan could be a solid choice.
What are the differences between WebTitan and Cloudflare?
As a user, I've noticed several differences between WebTitan and Cloudflare. Primarily, WebTitan is a web filtering solution designed to provide security against online threats like malware and phishing attacks. It's primarily used by businesses to control internet access and enforce web browsing policies. It's highly customizable and allows administrators to block specific websites or categories of websites.
Alternatively, Cloudflare is a Content Delivery Network (CDN) that also provides various security features. It accelerates website loading times by distributing content across multiple servers globally. It also offers protection against DDoS attacks, malicious bots, and other web threats. Unlike WebTitan, it's not primarily a web filtering service but rather focuses on enhancing website performance and security.
Overall, while both services offer web security features, they serve different primary functions and are used in different contexts.
