My top 3 Canva alternatives
By Shubhashree Halder, Content Manager
I have been examining different options instead of Canva for different design needs and I've found three that stand out: Figma, Microsoft PowerPoint, and InDesign.
Figma
Figma is a cloud-based design tool that is great for collaborative projects, allowing two or more people to work together so easily and work in real time, without needing to send ___ files to one or more people. If you are designing websites or app interfaces, you could quickly create interactive prototypes and test out ideas. Even with vector editing, it can do a remarkable job of creating logos and other graphics.
To Figma's credit in reference to the most popular tool Canva, Figma has sharper design features and user flexibility for features if you considered UX/UI design and prototyping as a major area of work. In contrast, Canva is a user-friendly platform designed for quick graphics frequently required by individual and small business users for graphics, basic logos, or social media posts. In short, Canva is perfect for single-use projects and prototyping or ample detail and several collaborators, Figma is the choice for a prototype or exercise involving precision and interactiveness.
Microsoft PowerPoint
Microsoft PowerPoint is not just for presentations. It's actually a very capable design tool that can be used for creating infographics, flyers, and even social media posts. The advantage of PowerPoint is its simplicity and familiarity. Most people have used it at some point, so there's less of a learning curve compared to other design tools. For instance, you can easily create a business presentation with custom graphics or design an eye-catching poster for an event.
InDesign
InDesign is Adobe's professional layout and page design software. It's perfect for creating multi-page documents like magazines, brochures, and eBooks. InDesign offers advanced typography options and has excellent support for print production workflows. For example, if you're self-publishing a book or creating a detailed report with lots of graphics and complex layouts, InDesign would be an excellent choice.
List of Alternatives to Canva
Here are some of Canva's top competitors in the Design category: Figma, Microsoft PowerPoint, InDesign or Gamma.
Figma brings value by providing a collaborative design tool that allows teams to create, prototype, and iterate on designs in real-time. With its cloud-based platform, Figma enables seamless collaboration, eliminating the need for multiple file versions and facilitating efficient communication across team members. Its intuitive interface and powerful design features empower designers to bring their visions to life while saving time and streamlining the design process.

Why is Figma a good alternative to Canva?
I find Canva to be a great alternative to Figma due to its simplicity and user-friendly interface. It is designed for non-designers and offers an extensive library of templates, graphics, and fonts, which makes it easy to create professional-looking designs without any design skills. Unlike Figma, Canva doesn't require you to start from scratch, which saves a lot of time. It also allows collaboration with team members and clients in real-time, similar to Figma. Furthermore, Canva has a free version that offers a wide range of features, making it more accessible for small businesses or individuals on a budget. While Figma might be more powerful for complex projects, Canva's ease of use and affordability make it an excellent alternative for simpler design needs.
What are the differences between Figma and Canva?
I have utilized both Canva and Figma for different objectives. Canva is a graphic design tool that offers a wide range of templates, making it easier for those without any design background to create professional-looking designs. It's perfect for social media posts, presentations, posters, and other visual content. Alternatively, Figma is a collaborative interface design tool primarily used by UX/UI designers. It allows multiple users to work on the same project simultaneously, making it an ideal tool for team-based projects. While both tools offer free versions, Figma’s free version is more generous than Canva’s. However, Canva has a simpler user interface which makes it more user-friendly for beginners.
Microsoft Powerpoint is a powerful presentation software that allows users to create visually stunning and professional slide decks. With its wide range of formatting and design options, Powerpoint enables users to effectively communicate their ideas, present data, and engage their audience.

Why is Microsoft PowerPoint a good alternative to Canva?
I find Canva to be a fantastic alternative to Microsoft PowerPoint. It offers a wide variety of ready-to-use templates that are both eye-catching and professional, saving me time on design. Canva's drag-and-drop interface is intuitive and user-friendly, making it easy to customize templates or create my own designs from scratch. Unlike PowerPoint, Canva is cloud-based which means I can access my presentations from any device, anywhere. This also allows for real-time collaboration with team members, which is a feature not available in PowerPoint. Additionally, Canva provides a library of free graphics, images and fonts which I can use to enhance my presentations. Overall, Canva combines ease-of-use with powerful design tools that make creating presentations a breeze.
What are the differences between Microsoft PowerPoint and Canva?
I have found several differences between Canva and Microsoft PowerPoint. Firstly, Canva is a web-based design tool, while PowerPoint is a desktop application. This means I can use Canva anywhere with an internet connection, while PowerPoint requires installation on a device. Secondly, Canva offers a vast library of templates, graphics, and fonts, which are constantly updated. PowerPoint also has templates but fewer in comparison and they are not updated as frequently. Thirdly, collaboration is easier on Canva as it allows multiple users to work on a design simultaneously. In contrast, PowerPoint does not natively support real-time collaboration. Lastly, Canva's user interface is more intuitive and easier to navigate for beginners compared to PowerPoint which has a steeper learning curve with its multitude of features.

Why is InDesign a good alternative to Canva?
I find Canva to be a great alternative to InDesign because it is significantly more user-friendly and intuitive. Canva's drag-and-drop interface allows even those with little design experience to create professional-looking designs. It offers a wide variety of templates, fonts, and graphics, which can be easily customized to create unique designs.
Unlike InDesign, Canva is web-based, meaning you can access your designs from any device with an internet connection. This makes collaboration easier as multiple people can work on the same design simultaneously. Plus, Canva has a free version that is quite comprehensive, making it a cost-effective choice for small businesses or individuals.
While InDesign has more advanced features, Canva's simplicity and accessibility make it an excellent alternative for most everyday design needs.
What are the differences between InDesign and Canva?
I compared the 2 services and noticed that Canva and InDesign, while both being graphic design tools, are quite different in their features and uses. Canva is an online tool that is very user-friendly, ideal for beginners or non-designers. It has a drag-and-drop feature and offers a wide range of templates, making it easy to create designs quickly. On the other hand, InDesign is a professional desktop publishing software by Adobe, used mainly by professionals for creating intricate layout designs and typography. It requires a certain level of expertise and offers more advanced features like master pages, character styles, and paragraph styles which are not available in Canva. However, unlike Canva which is free (with premium features available), InDesign comes with a cost as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription.

Easy way to create professional presentations
I've been using Gamma for presentations and workshops, and it's one of the few AI tools that actually saves me time. The AI-generated structure is usually very good, and it's easy to turn ideas into a polished presentation without spending hours on design. I especially like how quickly I can iterate, reorganize content, and create something that looks professional. It's not perfect, but for brainstorming, pitch decks, reports, and presentations, it's become part of my regular workflow.

Great but complex
Webflow is amazing, but maybe a bit too complex for me. It's perfect for those that need detailed design control, way beyond Squarespace and such. Lots of great features. But sometimes it feels way too complicated. So I don't recommend it to people that just need an easy website.
