Box's subscription option is essentially a step-ladder, beginning at the lower rungs as an individual/personal file storage solution and ending at the upper rungs as an enterprise level AI driven data management solution. The lowest rung on this ladder has two options, the free Individual and the Personal Pro tier. Both of these options are designed specifically for one user that wants to synchronize their files across multiple devices. We believe the free Individual tier is a great entry point and the Personal Pro tier is the first to offer a significant amount of space (100 GB) to store more than just a few documents and PDFs.

As we climb the ladder, moving into the team-based subscriptions is where things begin to change. Business Starter is the entry-level subscription for smaller teams; however, the 100 GB limit for all team members makes it feel somewhat restrictive. To us, the Business tier is where the "real" Box experience comes into play due to the fact that it allows for unlimited storage. For most companies looking to grow and want to be able to allow external collaborators to work together on projects, we would recommend the Business Plus tier over the Business tier.

On the higher end of the subscription options is Enterprise and Enterprise Plus. These subscriptions were created for industries and organizations that operate under the highest levels of risk and do not have the luxury of non-compliance. While we believe that Enterprise provides the necessary security requirements, Enterprise Plus is clearly the better value in 2026. This tier includes advanced AI that will provide analysis of the files stored in the system as well as additional security features such as Box Shield. Based upon our research, we believe that a large organization should bypass the Enterprise tier and go directly to the Enterprise Plus tier to save money and receive all the automated tools they will ultimately require.

On the other hand, Box is designed specifically for use within the "adult" business world. From our point of view, Box is the gold standard for businesses operating in highly regulated industries including health care, law and banking where one incorrect data leak could potentially cause financial disaster. Organizations requiring HIPAA, FedRAMP or GxP compliance will want to avoid building their own server farms and should choose Box every time.

We believe Box is also the ideal solution for organizations looking to create a "best-of-breed" technology stack. If your team uses Slack to communicate, DocuSign to sign contracts, and Salesforce to manage leads, then Box can act as the perfect unifying agent. Box does not attempt to force users into a specific ecosystem as both Microsoft and Google do. We would suggest Box for mid-to-large scale organizations needing to transition from using messy email attachments to structured and AI-based content management. To be honest, if you're a solo blogger; this may be overkill. However, for growing firms requiring the ability to automate document approval processes or maintain strict audit trails; we believe Box is the most effective option.

Ultimately, what determines whether Box is worth the cost, is whether you're merely looking for a digital attic or whether you have a high-performance engine for your business' content. In our view, as a small company seeking to store files, the price may be a bit too much compared to commodity storage available. However, as we see it, for those businesses that are growing, the value proposition will shift entirely. "Unlimited" everything included in the Business plans and above is not an extra feature; it's a huge comfort factor eliminating the continuous headache of managing storage quotas.

From our view point, the true ROI (Return on Investment) for Box in 2026 is its layers of Security and Automation. We highly recommend Box for companies that cannot afford one compliance mistake. When you consider the costs associated with a data breach or a HIPAA fine, the Enterprise levels start to look like bargains. For us, the fact that Box has integrated Box AI also changes the math; being able to ask questions of thousands of documents instantly, is going to save you and your team hours of manual searching time.

If your team is reliant on deeper integrations with Slack, Salesforce, or Microsoft 365, we believe the increased productivity will far outweigh the monthly subscription fee. We believe Box provides enough peace of mind and workflow speed to justify the cost, however, we would caution against purchasing the higher tiered versions unless you intend to use the additional governance and/or AI features.

In the world of Software as a Service (SaaS), there seems to be a "sweet spot" for most businesses — especially medium-sized companies — when choosing their Box plans. Most businesses find that the Business Plus plan fits their needs best, while the standard Business plan may be sufficient for internal file storage, however it can create too much friction when trying to collaborate externally, and it doesn't provide enough additional space to allow for uploads. In general, Business Plus provides the least amount of friction for collaboration and increases your upload limits so it's the best all-around "practical" option.

We believe that if you are small, you may be attracted to Business Starter; however we don't believe that Business Starter will last your company long-term beyond about six months. In addition to the fact that 100 GB is a very low limit for teams in 2026, we also believe that Business Plus has the best Return on Investment (ROI) as it comes with the meta data and tracking features that are needed to manage and grow a large number of files versus simply storing them in a digital pile.

However, we want to note that larger and heavily regulated companies seem to avoid the mid-tier options and go directly to Enterprise Plus. We believe this is due to the fact that the bundled security (Box Shield) and the native AI capabilities that come with Enterprise Plus make it the obvious choice for the large companies. If your company is large enough to have a separate legal or compliance department, we believe that Enterprise Plus is likely the most common choice because it eliminates the need to purchase five additional security add-ons later.

From our perspective, most businesses leave money on the table simply because they haven't optimized their setup or billing cycle.
