My top 3 Customer.io alternatives
By Frédéric Laffont, Chief Technology Officer
Braze
When I am looking for a way to get engaged through my products as they are happening in real time, I use Braze Canvas to create an actual experience of engaging across multiple channels. I will begin creating an onboarding Canvas based on "account_created", then use in-app behavior to make decisions on which path to take, and finally add exit conditions so once those accounts have been fully converted, no further nurturing is done. In terms of commerce, I prefer using email templates along side Catalogs when I want to be able to include individualized data (i.e. SKU numbers, available inventory levels, etc.) to enhance relevance of the messages being sent out without having to recreate all new campaigns each week. If I am launching new features and corresponding messaging, I like to leverage Feature Flags to control who sees the feature at what time, while also evaluating the effectiveness of the messaging within the same engagement stack.
ActiveCampaign
ActiveCampaign is the option I like when I want fast iteration on email-first automations, then I selectively add channels. The automation section is unusually prescriptive: it explicitly calls out 950+ automation recipes, an automations map, and A/B testing at the email + automation level. I also find the “SMS Add-on” clear about what you actually get (opt-in/consent tooling, 2-way inbox, and reply-triggered automations), which is the difference between “we send texts” and “we run SMS programs.”
HubSpot
HubSpot is where I land when marketing automation has to live inside a CRM, not next to it. The marketing-contacts model is concrete: Starter at $50/month with 1,000 included contacts, Professional at $890/month with 2,000, Enterprise at $3,600/month with 10,000. If I’m running full-funnel reporting, I’d rather have lifecycle stage, deals, and campaign touchpoints in one database, even if it means accepting HubSpot’s contact-tier mechanics instead of a pure event-driven messaging tool.
List of Alternatives to Customer.io
Here are some of Customer.io's top competitors in the Email Marketing category: Braze, ActiveCampaign, HubSpot or Klaviyo.

Why is Braze a good alternative to Customer.io?
Braze is the alternative I’d pick for product-led growth teams (mobile app + web) where “messaging” and “experience” blur together. If you’re coordinating push, in-app, email, SMS, and WhatsApp while reacting to live behavior, Canvas is built for that style of orchestration, including branching, real-time triggers, and conversion-based exits. I also like it for commerce teams that need non-user data (SKUs, store locations, subscriptions) to drive personalization, Catalogs is designed specifically to sync and store that kind of data inside the engagement layer. And if your team wants tighter experimentation loops, Feature Flags being part of the same ecosystem can reduce the “product tool vs messaging tool” handoff friction.
What are the differences between Braze and Customer.io?
Braze and Customer.io both do behavior-triggered messaging, but I think they diverge in what they optimize for. Customer.io’s pricing is built around profiles/objects and message volume (Essentials starts at $100/month for 5k profiles and 1M emails/month, with a visual workflow builder and basic data integrations). Braze, on the other hand, is unapologetically about orchestrating cross-channel journeys at scale inside Canvas, with explicit positioning around real-time triggers and “every channel” coordination (email, mobile app, SMS, WhatsApp, web, paid media). If I need a product catalog of non-user data living in the engagement layer (Catalogs) and I want that to directly power personalized messages, Braze has a first-class concept for it.
ActiveCampaign enables you to reach your target audience, guide your customers through the conversion funnel, and significantly increase your growth. This SaaS-based marketing platform is therefore ideal for optimizing your sales process.

Excellent deal redemption process through Secret. I was skeptical about the 90% discount initially, but the entire process from application to approval was transparent and straightforward. Secret's team provided clear instructions on how to apply the coupon code to my account. The discount is genuine and helped me access ActiveCampaign's marketing automation features at a fraction of the regular cost. This has been game-changing for my travel business operations and customer engagement. Highly recommend using Secret to access exclusive startup deals like this.

Why is ActiveCampaign a good alternative to Customer.io?
ActiveCampaign is a strong Customer.io alternative for small marketing teams, solo growth operators, and SMB sales teams that need automations they can iterate on daily without building a data pipeline first. I like that the platform describes automation scope in concrete terms (multi-step automations, 950+ recipes, automation actions, and an automations map), which maps to how most teams actually work: start with a few lifecycle sequences, then expand. If you need SMS, I find the add-on approach practical because it spells out operational necessities (opt-in/consent tools, a 2-way inbox, reply-triggered automation), not just “send texts.” And when your stack already uses vendors like Twilio or Postmark, the CX Apps + action model can keep orchestration centralized without forcing a rip-and-replace.
What are the differences between ActiveCampaign and Customer.io?
ActiveCampaign feels like “marketing automation as a workbench,” while Customer.io feels like “event-based messaging as a platform.” Customer.io Essentials bakes in cross-channel campaigns, webhook sends/receive, push + in-app, and API-triggered broadcasts as part of the core messaging model. ActiveCampaign’s pricing page emphasizes automation building blocks (multi-step automations, 950+ recipes, automation actions, A/B testing) and then treats certain channels as optional expansions, most notably an SMS Add-on with consent management, 2-way messaging, and automated reply triggers. For multi-channel execution, I also pay attention to ActiveCampaign’s “CX Apps” approach (e.g., Twilio SMS actions, Postmark transactional email actions, WhatsApp via Spoki), which can be great if you already standardize on those vendors.

Why is HubSpot a good alternative to Customer.io?
HubSpot is the alternative I’d recommend when your biggest pain isn’t “sending messages,” but “closing the loop between campaigns and pipeline.” For a B2B founder or RevOps lead, having Marketing + Sales activity tied to the same contact/deal records can simplify attribution, routing, and handoffs (especially once multiple teams touch the same accounts). The marketing-contacts pricing model is also explicit enough to budget around, Starter $50/month (1,000 contacts), Professional $890/month (2,000), Enterprise $3,600/month (10,000), even though you still need to plan for contact growth. Compared with Customer.io (Essentials starting at $100/month with profile-based limits), HubSpot usually wins when the CRM is the center of gravity and marketing automation is just one part of the operating system.

It also provides AI-based lead scoring, built-in phone, email, activity capture and more. This makes it easier to track the customer's journey and helps in making data-driven decisions.

What are the differences between Freshsales Suite and Customer.io?
I have found that Freshsales Suite and Customer.io are both powerful tools for managing customer relationships, but they have some key differences. Freshsales Suite is a full-fledged CRM platform that offers features like lead scoring, email tracking, and sales management. It's designed to help businesses manage their sales pipeline and improve their conversion rates. On the other hand, Customer.io is more focused on customer engagement and communication. It allows businesses to send targeted messages based on customer behavior, making it a great tool for marketing automation. While both tools offer email marketing capabilities, Customer.io provides more advanced segmentation and personalization features. So, if your business needs a comprehensive sales solution, Freshsales Suite might be the better choice. But if you're looking for a tool to enhance your customer engagement strategies, Customer.io could be the way to go.
