My top 3 Grasshopper alternatives
By Edouard Rosenblum, Co-founder @Secret
RingCentral MVP
RingCentral MVP is another great alternative. This cloud-based phone system offers more advanced features like video conferencing, team messaging, and even faxing. It's ideal for larger businesses with teams that need to collaborate remotely. For instance, a marketing team spread across different locations can use RingCentral MVP for their meetings and discussions. It also integrates with other business tools like Salesforce and Google Workspace, streamlining your workflow.
Vonage
Vonage is a comprehensive communication solution that provides voice, messaging, video, and data capabilities. It's perfect for businesses of all sizes due to its scalability. A real estate agency, for example, could use Vonage to connect their agents with clients seamlessly. Vonage also offers robust analytics tools that can help businesses track their communication performance and make data-driven decisions.
Google Voice
Google Voice is a free service that lets you make calls, send texts, and manage voicemails online. It's especially useful if you're running a small business or freelancing and want to keep your work communications separate from your personal number. For instance, freelancers often use Google Voice to maintain clear boundaries between their professional and private lives. Another handy feature is voicemail transcription—you can have your voicemails converted into text and sent directly to your email, which makes keeping track of messages much simpler.
As an alternative to Grasshopper, Google Voice is a solid choice, particularly if you're looking for a cost-effective solution. While Grasshopper offers more advanced business-oriented features, Google Voice covers the basics well and is ideal if you're just starting out or prefer a straightforward, budget-friendly option.

Dependable 2FA and Notifications (with Joinsecret Credit)
We use Vonage mainly for two-factor authentication and outbound notifications, and it has been dependable overall. Setup was straightforward with the docs they provide, and getting roughly $2.5k in API credit through Joinsecret gave us room to build things properly before watching every cent

Why is Vonage a good alternative to Grasshopper?
I have found Grasshopper to be an excellent alternative to Vonage due to several key features. Firstly, Grasshopper offers a robust set of tools that cater specifically to small businesses, such as virtual faxing and business texting, which are not available with Vonage. Secondly, Grasshopper provides a more streamlined user interface that is easier to navigate and manage. The pricing structure is also more flexible and affordable, allowing for greater cost control. Furthermore, the quality of customer service at Grasshopper is superior with 24/7 support available. Finally, the ability to use existing phones without needing additional hardware provides a convenience that Vonage does not. These benefits make Grasshopper a compelling choice over Vonage.
What are the differences between Vonage and Grasshopper?
I have found that Grasshopper and Vonage, while both being VoIP providers, offer different features and cater to different business needs. Grasshopper is primarily designed for small businesses and entrepreneurs, providing them with a professional phone system that includes features like custom greetings, call forwarding, and voicemail transcription. It's more of a virtual phone system that doesn't require additional hardware.
Vonage, However, provides a broader range of services suitable for both small businesses and large enterprises. It offers more advanced features such as video conferencing, team messaging, CRM integrations, and analytics. Vonage also allows for more customization and scalability but may require additional hardware depending on the chosen plan.
Therefore, the choice between Grasshopper and Vonage largely depends on the size of your business and the specific communication needs you have.

Why is Google Voice a good alternative to Grasshopper?
As a small business owner, I find Google Voice to be an excellent alternative to Grasshopper. The primary reason is cost-effectiveness. Google Voice offers a free version with basic features which is suitable for startups or small businesses. It also integrates seamlessly with other Google services like Gmail and Google Calendar, making it easier to manage my business operations. The transcription feature in Google Voice is quite accurate and saves time when responding to voicemails. Additionally, its user-friendly interface makes it easy even for non-tech savvy individuals to navigate through the platform. While Grasshopper may offer more advanced features, for a small business looking for cost efficiency and ease of use, Google Voice is a commendable option.
What are the differences between Google Voice and Grasshopper?
I have been using both Google Voice and Grasshopper for my communication needs and I've noticed several differences between the two. Google Voice is a free service that offers basic features like voicemail, call forwarding, and text messaging. It's perfect for personal use or small businesses with minimal communication needs. On the other hand, Grasshopper is a paid service that offers more advanced features tailored for businesses. These include multiple extensions, business texting, and custom greetings. Grasshopper also provides a professional touch with a dedicated business number, which Google Voice doesn't offer. However, Google Voice excels in international calling with lower rates compared to Grasshopper. So, if you're running a business with more complex communication needs, Grasshopper might be the better choice. But for personal use or small-scale operations, Google Voice should suffice.

For its part, Grasshopper is more focused on small businesses and entrepreneurs. It provides a virtual phone system that allows businesses to maintain a professional image without investing in expensive hardware. Its key features include call forwarding, voicemail transcription, and business texting. However, it lacks some of the advanced features offered by GoTo Connect such as video conferencing.

Reliable Calling with Strong Integrations
We originally tried Dialpad because we found a startup perk through Joinsecret that included 10 user seats, and that made it easier to test with the whole team instead of just a pilot group. Glad we did, because setup was fast, number porting was smoother than expected, and the shared inbox for messages has kept our front desk workflow much cleaner

Great Onboarding; Less Impressive Sales Tactics.
The onboarding process for Nextiva was straightforward, with a representative guiding me through all the features. However, I found the sales process misleading. I was told I needed multiple add-ons to sign up, which were free for the first 3 months. Now, I'm struggling to cancel these add-ons, worth over $2/month, before I get charged and I'm having trouble getting in touch with anyone for assistance.

Establishing Support Excellence
As a novice in using VOIP, I initially found it difficult to comprehend the technical terms. I decided to use AceFone's VOIP service for my home setup when I transitioned from my copper landline to full fibre. I was concerned about losing my landline number during this process. To connect the DECT phones in my house with the AceFone VOIP service, I bought a Gigaset N300ip unit. I required additional information from AceFone to input into this base unit. The AceFone representative spent 90 minutes assisting me with the setup. He was persistent and I never felt any pressure that the issue couldn't be resolved. He remotely controlled my computer via ZOHO and managed the settings in the base unit interface. Even after successfully setting up the connection and equipment, it wouldn't have been easy without his help. I'm extremely grateful for such a determined support agent. I chose Acefone due to its competitive pricing and positive reviews, and I appreciate the simple interface and supporting documentation jargon.
