One is the ability to record calls (up to 15 hours/month) as needed, a must-have for many companies needing to provide evidence of compliance or to monitor the details of their calls internally to evaluate employee performance. The second is Visual Voicemail with a transcribed version, making voicemail significantly easier to use by allowing employees to simply read their voicemails instead of having to listen to them. I think that is huge for client presentations. We also get a dedicated team messaging capability. However, the big differentiator is the inclusion of the VBC App Center. If you utilize applications such as Salesforce or HubSpot, you must purchase Premium in order to integrate your calls with these tools. I would highly recommend Premium if your company is expanding, utilizing video conferencing and wants to keep all of their various work streams connected. That is the difference between a professional phone system and a fully integrated workplace.

Does Vonage have a free plan?

Vonage has a free trial, but they do not have a free plan for their full UC (Unified Communication) service (VBC). Most other robust business VoIP platforms don’t either, so we don’t think it would be sustainable for a carrier to provide a "free forever" option for something as important as a critical phone system.


On the plus side, Vonage is so confident in their service they include a free trial. In my opinion, a trial is a much better way to test a communications platform than a free trial because a trial allows you to get all of your employees involved, and you can build the same call flow that you will have when you go live. You can also test the mobile app with your teams' devices, and check how well the desk phones work with Vonage's service. You should definitely take advantage of this free trial and test it yourself in a live environment before you pay anything for a subscription. Testing the feature in the Mobile, Premium or Advanced plan is what will help you determine if Vonage is the right fit for your company’s communication needs and style before you commit to an annual contract. Just test it!

What are the limitations of Vonage's free trial?

The limits of Vonage's Free Trial, rather than what aspects of Vonage's product you can test, are related to how many numbers you can call/communicate with.


A Free Trial is intended to let you evaluate whether or not you want to use Vonage as an operational business platform. If you are going to use Vonage as part of a marketing campaign, then Vonage has placed several restrictions on your ability to abuse this service while still allowing you to test the functionality, reliability and quality of Vonage.


In my opinion, these restrictions were put in place by Vonage to limit potential abuses of the Free Trial and to help you to concentrate on testing Vonage's capabilities and not using Vonage as an operational business platform.


As an example of this, I have seen many API trial accounts (and also seen similar communications restrictions in the VBC trial) that allow you to make voice calls or send SMS messages to only one of your own registered numbers and/or a few other known numbers to test Vonage. It will not permit you to purchase additional virtual phone numbers with your free trial credit and may also append a tag to any SMS message you send such as [FREE SMS DEMO, TEST MESSAGE].


So, essentially, Vonage's Free Trial should only be used to do internal testing of Vonage's products and services. The best way to test Vonage's functionality is to test the quality of the voice, test the seamless operation of the mobile app on different types of devices, and test the ease of use of the administrator portal. After you have tested the basic functions of Vonage, you can choose to move up to a paid account and remove all of these limitations so that you can communicate with anyone in the world.
