01 Is DataCamp any Good? My expert Review
My experience with DataCamp has been very mixed overall however I believe it is definitely worth the money I have spent on it. As I transitioned from being an operations manager to a full time data analyst I had to rapidly acquire knowledge in both SQL and Python. The ability to interactively code within DataCamp’s browser-based environment allowed me to immediately test out new query ideas (as well as other programming concepts) in an environment where there were no local development issues.
DataCamp’s SQL courses were instrumental in allowing me to understand how to perform joins and sub-queries and those skills were easily transferable to my daily job. In fact, after only two weeks I was able to create simple queries to provide our marketing team with basic customer data.
On the other hand, while the lesson format is extremely helpful for learning in short intervals (i.e., during my lunch break), the project portion of each course does sometimes make things a bit too easy by guiding you through each and every step. Specifically, when I worked with a real messy dataset containing missing data points and inconsistent formatting at my current job; I felt the DataCamp classes didn’t adequately prepare me for the "chaos" of working with such a dataset.
Additionally, I do feel the cost of $15 per month is somewhat steep, given that I only used DataCamp for about four months before I felt like I had obtained the majority of what I could gain from it.
In conclusion, DataCamp provides a great structure for developing data-related skills however to develop proficiency in data analysis and manipulation, it is essential to pair the use of DataCamp with actual hands-on experience with messy and real world data sets.
