01 Is Google DNS any Good? My expert Review
I have used Google DNS for many years, and I believe this tool has reached that "set-it-and-forget-it" status – the best possible compliment for a user. It took less than two minutes to update my router to use 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
International website loading speeds were noticeably improved after switching to Google DNS — I often go to Japanese e-commerce sites as part of my job — and I am certain Google’s infrastructure simply resolves queries much faster in virtually all scenarios. In addition to the speed improvements, I find Google DNS to be very reliable — I do not recall a time when DNS resolution has failed me at a critical moment (i.e., video conference) or while trying to access cloud applications.
However, the service raises serious privacy concerns — Google logs your queries for a short period of time, so they could potentially know which domains you’re visiting. Although this is something I’m personally not too worried about (since I’m not really concerned with Google knowing I view news sites and work platforms), I would strongly advise against this if someone wants to maximize their privacy.
Another small annoyance I’ve experienced is that, on occasion, geo-restricted content services will incorrectly determine my location (although these instances are extremely rare). All-in-all, Google DNS offers what it promises — fast, reliable domain name resolution that requires no technical knowledge. For most users that don’t place a high value on data privacy, this is a great, free way to improve upon the typical performance of their ISP’s DNS servers.
