01 Is Zoho Books any Good? My expert Review

When I evaluate accounting tools for SMBs, I look for three things: speed (how fast you can invoice and reconcile), control (roles, auditability, approvals), and scale (can it grow past “freelancer mode”). Zoho Books hits that sweet spot: it’s a modern, cloud-first bookkeeping system that covers quoting/invoicing, expenses, banking, reporting, projects, and inventory, without feeling like a clunky legacy accounting suite.

What impressed me most about the product was how operational it felt day-to-day: customer portal automated reminders reduce back & forth on payments mobile experience allows realistic go-based invoicing expense capture; on JoinSecret reviewers consistently highlight responsive support multi-user collaboration with roles permissions the portal mobile access customizable reporting as quality of life wins.

Pricing is also a strong lever. In the US, there’s a free plan for micro-businesses (available indefinitely if annual revenue stays under $50K), and paid plans start around $20/org/month (or $15/org/month billed annually). From there you can scale into project billing, multi-currency, workflow customization, and advanced inventory/BI on higher tiers.

Trade-offs are typical for category but worth calling out: Zoho Books generally has fewer third party integrations than quickbooks so if your stack depends on niche apps you may need workarounds or to lean into the zoho suite instead payroll is another common gap some users want deeper built-in payroll options end up relying on add-ons or external services.

Zoho Books is an excellent fit for founders & finance owners who want reliable accounting fundamentals plus automation collaboration ecosystem path (CRM helpdesk payments) as they grow. If you’re an integration-heavy operation or need advanced payroll out of the box, i’d compare carefully with QuickBooks Online or Xero , but for many SMBs, Zoho Books is the smarter value pick.

04 How Zoho Books compare to similar software?

When comparing the two tools, Zoho Books and Quickbooks, it is difficult to identify a single main difference. In fact, while the two accounting platforms offer relatively similar and comprehensive functionality, they differ in two main respects. The first difference is that Zoho Books really comes into its own when integrated with the other software offered by Zoho. The second difference is the target audience. This is because while Zoho Books is perfect for smaller businesses that don't have time to waste, Quickbook is relevant for businesses that are starting to grow. Let's find out more about this together.

Let's go back to the first difference: integrations. Quickbooks offers over 650 integrations with third-party software. As a result, the tool integrates easily with existing business workflows. Zoho, on the other hand, offers a much smaller number of third-party integrations. However, this accounting software interfaces seamlessly with tools such as Zoho Workplace, Zoho CRM...

Zoho Books and Tally are both powerful accounting software solutions, but they have distinct differences that make them suitable for different business needs.

One of the fundamental differences between Zoho Books and Tally is their approach to accounting. Zoho Books is a cloud-based accounting software, which means you can access your financial data from anywhere with an internet connection. It offers the flexibility of online collaboration and real-time updates. On the other hand, Tally is traditionally installed on a local computer, and data is stored on-premises. This can be advantageous for businesses with security concerns or those operating in areas with unreliable internet connectivity.

Another significant difference is in the range of features and functionalities they offer. Zoho Books provides a comprehensive set of accounting tools, including invoicing, expense tracking, bank reconciliation, and financial reporting. It also offers features like inventory management and...

05 Who is Zoho Books best for according to our reviewers?

  • Freelancers and solopreneurs
Great if you want a real accounting system (invoicing, expenses, bank reconciliation, reports) with a long-term free tier for very small revenue businesses.

  • Small service businesses (agencies, consultants, studios)
Ideal for teams that bill clients regularly and need portals, recurring invoices, payment reminders, role-based access, and project/time billing as they scale.

  • Startups already using Zoho (CRM/Desk/Workplace)
Best for companies that want accounting to plug into a broader operating system, keeping customer, sales, and finance data consistent across one suite.

  • Ecommerce sellers and small retailers
A strong match if you need inventory tracking and purchase/sales workflows, and can move up tiers for deeper inventory controls and warehouses when required.

  • Bookkeepers and accounting firms managing multiple clients
Useful for firms that want collaborative access, structured permissions, scheduled reporting, and a standardized workflow they can repeat across multiple organizations.

    Solid All-in-One Accounting Basics

I appreciate that Zoho Books covers the basics really well without feeling stripped down. Quotes, invoices, vendor bills, purchase orders, and bank matching are all in one place and work as expected. Stripe integration was simple, and online payments started coming in faster after we switched. The only thing I’d improve is the learning curve around taxes for first-time users

    Dependable for Small Ecommerce Bookkeeping

I run a small ecommerce side business, and Zoho Books has been good for expense tracking and keeping business and personal spending separate. Receipt capture works well enough, and categorizing transactions gets quicker once rules are in place. I would like slightly better native inventory depth, but for bookkeeping and invoicing it has been steady and easy to trust

Time Tracking to Invoice Made Easy

I’ve used Zoho Books for a consulting business and the time tracking to invoice flow is probably my favorite feature. Logging hours, adding them to a project, and converting them into an invoice is straightforward. The interface is mostly clean, although a couple of settings are buried deeper than I’d like. I also came in via Joinsecret, and the $100 credit in the Zoho Wallet offset some setup costs early on

"Complete accounting, requires a bit of investment"

"I started using Zoho Books to manage the accounting for my business and overall it's a really complete tool. Invoice creation is fast, expense tracking is well thought out, and the dashboards give a clear view of financial health. What also convinced me is its native integration with the rest of the Zoho ecosystem, handy if you already use their other tools. Where I struggled more was the learning curve: the interface is dense and it takes some time to get your bearings, especially if you don't have accounting training, although I feel this issue appears in almost all other software of this type ;) I had a few exchanges with support who were responsive, but the answers sometimes remained a bit too generic for my specific situation. For the price, especially compared to solutions like Quickbooks, it's still an excellent deal for freelancers and small businesses that want real accounting management without breaking the bank!"
