01 Is Dext any Good? My expert Review
When I am evaluating expense and document capture products, there is only one question I have: Does this produce reliable results to eliminate the back-and-forth which converts accounting from an annual chore to a weekly fire drill? Dext accomplishes that. It resides at the "Pre-Accounting" layer capturing receipts, invoices and statements; identifying and then transferring the relevant information into your Accounting System so you have less time spent entering numbers and more time spent reviewing those numbers.
What impressed me most is the flexibility of capture and the workflow thinking behind it. The mobile app is genuinely practical (single, multiple, and multi-page “combine” capture modes), and the email-in approach is perfect for vendor invoices. Pair that with bank statement extraction, supplier rules automation, and deep integrations (30+ accounting software connections and support for thousands of banks), and Dext becomes a central inbox for financial paperwork rather than just a scanner.
Dext also shines when you need governance without heavy ERP complexity. Expense approval workflows and structured reviews help teams stay compliant, while real-time insights make it easier to spot spend patterns before month-end. If you’re an accounting practice, the broader ecosystem (including tools like Dext Precision for data health and Dext Commerce for e-commerce reconciliation) adds meaningful leverage beyond basic capture.
There are trade-offs. Pricing can feel steep for very small businesses, and some advanced capabilities rely on allowances/credits, so costs can climb with volume. Like any OCR-led product, edge-case receipts and unusual invoices may still need manual correction, and getting the most value requires initial setup (categories, tax rates, rules, approval flows). As a cloud platform, it also depends on a stable connection.
