01 Is McAfee any Good? My expert Review
When I review security software, I'm looking at two areas: whether or not it provides good protection against threats and how easy it is to utilize without penalizing users for doing so. McAfee does well in the area of protecting users from malware, ransomware, etc., and has developed a "Digital Safety" platform that includes additional forms of protection in addition to traditional antivirus software.
McAfee's digital safety platform provides a hub of sorts for managing your digital safety. The platform consists of several tools such as: real-time threat protection; a secure VPN service for public Wi-Fi connections; a password manager; and an identity monitoring tool that alerts you to potentially risky behavior before it escalates into a larger issue. Additionally, I appreciate that McAfee offers other privacy-related tools (such as tracker removal) and shredding files that could be useful for individuals dealing with sensitive information/documents.
The best McAfee experience is on plans that support multiple (and sometimes unlimited) devices, because that’s where its value becomes obvious: one subscription, one dashboard, and consistent coverage across laptops and phones. For families, the combination of parental controls and identity safeguards is compelling, especially if you want something more guided than piecing together separate apps.
My main reservations are familiar ones in this category. Full system scans can noticeably slow older machines, phishing protection is solid but not always best-in-class, and pricing can feel less competitive at entry level versus rivals that bundle more “tune-up” utilities. I also wish McAfee were more restrained with occasional notifications and upsell moments.
I would suggest McAfee to individuals that require complete coverage of their digital presence (i.e. security, privacy and identity) and will actually use the VPN and identity features (not just the antivirus). If you can combine a discount with an annual subscription (as provided by JoinSecret), the cost/benefit ratio becomes far more favorable.
