02 NordVPN Plan details

NordVPN Logo

Basic

Pricing: $13 / month

Best for:

Budget-conscious users who only need a reliable, high-speed VPN to secure their internet connection and bypass geo-blocks without any extra tools

I'm going to be as honest as possible about the basic plan: it's the VPN itself. It works perfectly if you're using another password manager and you don't want cloud storage. The Nordlynx protocol, which is one of the fastest protocols out right now, is included. It will work with any device in your house (up to 10) and will allow you to bypass Geo-Blocks or use Public Wi-Fi safely. It has everything you need, the heavy-duty encryption and access to their large server network; however, it does NOT include any of the other features that make NordVPN so special. If you are tech savvy enough to set up and manage your own security stack, then there is no need to spend money on anything more than the basic package.

Main features

High-speed VPN

Strict no-logs policy

10 simultaneous device connections

NordVPN Logo

Plus

Pricing: $14 / month

Best for:

Active internet users looking for an all-around security boost, as it adds a cross-platform password manager and advanced malware/ad blocking

For many users, the Plus plan represents the ideal place in the Nord ecosystem to begin bundling services. In addition to the VPN service, NordPass, a legitimate cross-platform password management tool is included with the purchase of this tier. However, the true expert value with this package lies in Threat Protection Pro. While the base threat protection package will identify potential threats, only the Pro version provides the ability to scan files as they are being downloaded for viruses/malware and block domain name system (DNS) based tracking. For users that have been frustrated by juggling multiple subscriptions for security tools or those seeking a 'set it and forget it' model for their family's needs, this tier provides the best dollar-to-value ratio.

Main features

Cross-platform password manager

Data breach scanner

Advanced Threat Protection Pro

NordVPN Logo

Complete

Pricing: $15 / month

Best for:

Power users and professionals who need to secure their digital life further with 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage for sensitive files and backups

Although The Complete plan is similar to The Plus plan but with a 1 TB NordLocker encrypted cloud storage locker added, it is only valuable to you if you are going to use cloud storage. So, if you are using Google One or iCloud, then adding another cloud storage service may be redundant unless you need to store sensitive files such as documents that require zero knowledge encryption where no one at the provider will be able to see them. For remote workers, or freelancers who have sensitive information from clients, having 1 TB of encrypted space that ties into your security suite for just a few extra dollars a month is a tremendous value. Additionally, The Complete plan includes scam caller protection on mobile; however, the 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage is what makes The Complete plan so appealing.

Main features

1 TB encrypted cloud storage

Next-generation file encryption

Personal data leak scanner

NordVPN Logo

Ultra

Pricing: $16 / month

Best for:

Users seeking maximum protection, providing all previous features plus advanced identity theft recovery, cyber insurance, and personal data removal services

Ultra is a “full protection” emergency option from Nord for people who need a security blanket for their worst nightmares. As with complete, you’ll get the personal data removal tool powered by incogni which will ask the data broker to remove your information. What really stands out is cyber insurance. In today's world of identity theft being a horrible experience to clean up after, having some form of coverage for scams and id restorations is very reassuring. I would say it is way overkill for most users but if you are a public figure or one of those individuals who are extremely worried about what could happen to your finances due to a data breach, then this is your peace of mind package.

Main features

Personal data removal tool (Incogni)

Cyber extortion protection insurance

Identity theft recovery coverage

Which plan should I choose for my company?

The best NordVPN Plan for your company largely depends on how many employees you have in total as well as whether you are a startup of only a handful of employees or a larger growing company that will need management tools. For most founders/teams of 3-5 people, the Plus plan is the way to go. The plus plan includes both the VPN and NordPass (a secure password manager), which is a huge benefit when needing to share logins and passwords among employees.

However, a major drawback to all of the "standard" plans from Basic to Ultra is that they are "Consumer" plans. Consumer plans mean that there is no central account to be managed. This means that each employee has their own login credentials, and if an employee leaves, removing their ability to access your network is a time-consuming and frustrating process.

If your company has more than 4-5 employees, we feel strongly that using a standard plan would be an inefficient use of resources. We also feel that the Complete plan is a better option for small agencies looking for 1 TB of cloud storage but it still does not include a "Dedicated IP" or the central Admin Panel that a large company needs to whitelist access to their servers.

In general, we think you should stick to either the Basic or Plus plan if you are a Solopreneur. However, we also think that if you have a team of employees, managing individual accounts and trying to manage user access will be maddening. From where we stand, a real company needs a central Admin Panel to be able to manage user permissions and this only happens when you step away from the standard consumer tiers and into one of the business solutions such as NordLayer.

Is PureVPN better than NordVPN?

Determining whether PureVPN is better than NordVPN depends on your specific needs. PureVPN is ideal for users who prioritize affordability and a user-friendly experience, especially those who need a VPN for basic security and streaming purposes. Its extensive server network and lower cost make it a strong choice for budget-conscious users.

However, if advanced security features, such as Double VPN and CyberSec, are essential to you, and you're willing to invest in higher-level privacy and faster, more reliable connections, NordVPN would be the better option.

Is Surfshark better than NordVPN?

Determining whether Surfshark is better than NordVPN depends on individual needs and priorities. Surfshark is an excellent choice for users seeking affordability and the ability to connect unlimited devices simultaneously. It offers essential security features and a user-friendly interface that caters to families and individuals with diverse device needs.

In contrast, NordVPN is ideal for those who prioritize advanced security and privacy features, such as Double VPN and a broader server network, which provide enhanced protection and faster connections. While Surfshark offers great value and essential features, NordVPN excels in security and server variety, making it preferable for security-conscious users.

Surfshark vs NordVPN

Which tool is better than NordVPN ?

When looking at alternative tools to NordVPN, the decision usually hinges on whether you want a leaner budget, a more intuitive interface, or specialized security add-ons. While Nord remains the "gold standard" for speed, these competitors carved out specific niches that might suit your setup better.

The budget-friendly Surfshark is the most popular alternative, essentially solving Nord's primary friction point: cost and device limits. Unlike Nord’s 10-device cap, Surfshark offers unlimited simultaneous connections, making it the "all-you-can-eat" option for big households. In our opinion, if you're looking for the best value, Surfshark’s long-term plans are almost impossible to beat.

For those who prioritize a seamless user experience, the premium powerhouse ExpressVPN is the natural fit. It’s slightly more expensive, but we think its custom "Lightway" protocol and incredibly simple, one-click apps make it the most reliable choice for people who aren't tech experts. On the other hand, the feature-packed PureVPN is a solid contender for those who want a massive server network and niche extras like port forwarding or a dedicated IP.

While NordVPN excels as a high-speed security suite, we believe these alternatives offer unique advantages—whether it’s Surfshark’s infinite device count, ExpressVPN’s polished simplicity, or PureVPN’s specialized technical perks. For a broader overview of competing services and how they stack up feature by feature, you can also explore this list of Atlas VPN alternatives that includes NordVPN, Surfshark, and other major players.

Does NordVPN have a free plan?

There isn’t really a “free” version of NordVPN; however, that’s somewhat reassuring. Generally speaking, when a VPN is free, it either takes some form of your data (and/or bandwidth) or severely restricts server choice and speed. The alternative, instead of having a “free” tier, is that NordVPN uses a 30 day money back guarantee. This essentially functions like a “test drive” where you can use any of the premium plans – Basic, Plus, or Ultimate — and get all of the real performance and features for a full month.

In my opinion, I believe this approach is superior, as you will receive a true representation of what you are getting. For users who are using Android devices, I did find one small loophole. I've noticed that Nord offers a 3 day free trial via the Google Play Store. This could be an excellent way to try the app itself, but not pay anything to do so initially. However, for many users, I would simply suggest purchasing a 1 month, or 1 year subscription directly from their website. In addition, the refund process has always been relatively smooth as long as you contact them via Live Chat prior to the expiration of the 30 day period. As always, be aware that if you purchase through the Apple App Store, then the refund is processed by Apple, and not NordVPN, which may result in a slightly more complicated administrative process.

What are the limitations of NordVPN's free trial?

A number of limitations come with the 7-day free trial that you can get by way of NordVPN in the Google Play Store on your Android. The most significant is probably the fact that you will have to use the free trial on a mobile device first, regardless of where you intend to ultimately utilize the VPN, including your desktop computer. Using the free trial on an iOS (or Windows) system has no alternative other than going the 30 day money back guarantee route; you will have to pay for the VPN before getting the money back. To us, the most significant "gotcha" is that the auto-renewal kicks in after the mobile trial period expires -- unless you remember to cancel at least 24 hours prior to the expiration date, you will automatically be charged for a full year of the VPN immediately.

To us, another big obstacle is that NordVPN cannot issue refunds themselves when you signed up using the Apple App Store or Google Play. You will have to plead your case to Apple or Google -- neither one is known for being reliable in resolving such disputes. We highly recommend signing up for the VPN through their own website as opposed to either the Apple App Store or Google Play. In our estimation, although the 30-day guarantee may appear to be "risk-free," in reality, the money you pay is a type of short term loan to the company, as the money does not become available in your bank account until approximately 10 days after the refund is processed. This is a good service; however, to avoid an accidental charge, you need to keep track of your schedule.

06 Client’s review on NordVPN pricing

  • Saul Rivera

“I’ve been using the Basic plan for about two years now, and honestly, the value for the money is hard to beat if you’re patient enough to wait for a sale. I managed to snag a two-year deal that averaged out to less than $3.50 a month. For that price, having a reliable connection that doesn’t throttle my streaming speeds is a total win. I did have to pay the full amount upfront, which was a bit of a sting at first, but when you break it down monthly, it’s cheaper than my morning coffee. Just a heads up—keep an eye on that auto-renewal price, as it can jump up quite a bit if you aren't paying attention.”

  • Mariam Humphrey

“What actually sold me on NordVPN wasn't just the VPN itself, but the Plus plan. I was already looking for a decent password manager, and realizing I could bundle NordPass for basically an extra dollar a month made the decision a no-brainer for me. It’s significantly cheaper than paying for a VPN and a separate security suite elsewhere. I love that I don't have to manage multiple subscriptions across different platforms. It feels like a very fair price for the peace of mind you get, especially with the malware blocking included. It’s definitely worth the investment if you want to simplify your digital security without breaking the bank.”

  • Magnus Gutierrez

“The 30-day money-back guarantee is what finally pushed me to try it. I’m always skeptical of long-term commitments, but the refund process seemed straightforward enough that I felt safe putting the money down for a year. I’ve since upgraded to the Complete plan because the 1 TB of cloud storage is surprisingly handy for my freelance design work. While Nord isn't the absolute cheapest option on the market—I know there are budget brands out there—the stability and the sheer number of server locations make it feel like a premium product that's priced realistically for what you get.”

07 NordVPN Q&A

What are the different NordVPN plans available to subscribers?

NordVPN has developed into a tiered system of security products, and the four plans available — Basic, Plus, Complete, and Ultra (also referred to as Prime) — offer a range of options to meet the level of digital paranoia and storage needs that users have. The lowest tier is the Basic plan — this is the core VPN engine that provides an encrypted tunnel, and also offers the high speeds required for streaming or hiding one's IP address; however, it does not include any of the specialized security features that the other three plans offer.

At the next tier up is the Plus plan, in which NordVPN introduces two tools that will likely be used regularly by the average user. These include NordPass (a password manager), and Threat Protection Pro, which is a lightweight version of an antivirus tool that scans downloaded files, and kills ads. Moving to the Complete plan adds 1 TB of secure, encrypted cloud storage. And, at the top end is the Ultra plan — which includes all of the previous features plus data removal services, and actual cyber insurance for identity theft — and is often referred to as the "full bodyguard" plan.

From our point of view, we believe that the best choice for most users will be the Plus plan — since the tools provided for malware protection and password management are likely to be used daily. We see the Basic plan as being a bit bare-bones, while the upper-tier plans may provide more than what many users would need — unless they require a dedicated location to store their encrypted backups. From this perspective, we recommend that users start with the Plus plan, and then move to a higher tier only when they find themselves needing to utilize a specific service such as additional cloud storage. Before committing, it’s also smart to check whether a current NordVPN promo is available, as long-term discounts can significantly narrow the price gap between plans.

What benefits does NordVPN offer that attract business users?

NordVPN is a little odd when it comes to business, as although it is considered a “consumer” type of service, it has many features which are attractive to solopreneurs and small, nimble teams. We believe that the biggest advantage that draws us to NordVPN, is Meshnet. Meshnet allows you to create a private virtual network over the Internet among various devices across the globe with out having to go through the complexity of setting up a server. This is a large advantage to small businesses as it will allow them to access employee files located on a work computer from home, as well as local development environments as if they were actually sitting at their workstations, all with out having to set up a corporate fire wall.

Another feature that we believe is a major draw to NordVPN for businesses is the Dedicated IP option. To us, this is a non-negotiable for companies that are using “allow listing” to protect their internal applications such as a CRM or AWS management console. With a dedicated IP, the company’s systems know where the traffic is coming from and can therefore allow or deny access based on the user’s identity. The Plus plan includes a password manager for securely managing credentials; this along with the above two options makes for a solid starting point.

However, we believe that small businesses should be realistic about their needs. As soon as there are more than 5 people working for a company, the lack of an administrative center to manage users and policies on the basic plans becomes unmanageable. In our opinion, NordVPN is ideal for the “hustle” stage of a business, however once you want to monitor who logged into what system at what time etc., it is time to look into the actual enterprise version of NordVPN, called Nordlayer.

What types of teams benefit most from using NordVPN?

Teams that typically will be able to utilize NordVPN the best, would be small agile teams, rather than large corporate departments. Creative Agencies and Small Remote Teams tend to be the two main beneficiaries when utilizing NordVPN. Because NordVPN has an allowance of up to 10 simultaneous connections, a very small team can protect all of their devices with a single setup and no need for a complicated IT infrastructure. I think the Meshnet feature is a little known secret for these teams; allowing developers or designers to connect to each other's local machine or a central "office" workstation as if they were physically connected via a local area network (LAN) can be a game changer for secure file transfers and web build testing.

I believe Journalists, Researchers, and Marketing Teams also find great value in the specialty servers available through NordVPN. When conducting market research in Tokyo but based in London, being able to switch your IP address in an instant is absolutely non-negotiable. That being said, I do recommend exercising caution if your team is growing rapidly. In my opinion, once you reach the 5-10 member threshold, your team will outgrow the Personal Plans due to a lack of a central dashboard to control how all employees' access.

For those larger "Corporate" Squads, I would recommend considering NordLayer instead. As I see it, NordLayer is designed for the "Big Leagues" of Team Management.

Should businesses consider NordVPN a worthwhile VPN investment?

In many ways, whether a business would find NordVPN to be worth investing in as a VPN is dependent upon how large their business is. As a solopreneur, or very small team of people working together, we think this is a tremendous value. You get enterprise-level encryption and features such as Meshnet, which will allow you to build a private and secure network between remote computers, all for the cost of two cups of coffee per month. We feel that the Plus plan is where you really win because the included password manager (NordPass) takes away the problem that most small teams have of trying to figure out "where did we put that login?"

We do encourage you to be realistic about your business' future, however. We feel that for companies with more than five to ten employees, the consumer plans offered by NordVPN may not be a good long term business investment. The reason for this is due to the fact that each account is tied to an individual; therefore, you don't have central control. It's difficult to onboard a new employee, or remove access from an employee after they've left, unless you are going to have to share a password.

If you need a dedicated account manager or if you need to have some way to bill centrally, we think you should take a closer look at NordLayer. While we feel that the consumer version of NordVPN has the fastest speeds available, and provides individual users with the best possible security, it does lack the administration support that a growing company needs.

What NordVPN subscription do most users opt for?

The basic plan is an obvious choice for the very basics of VPN service - but the plus plan is where most folks are going to end up in order to have all the features they need to keep the web less painful (such as the password manager and the malware blocker). Most people we see don't want to manage 12 different passwords/subscription services, and bundling the two together will help reduce clutter.

We believe the Basic plan will be the runner-up, mainly due to the "purist" crowd that simply wants to bypass a geo-block on netflix or hide their ip when torrenting. We also think that the Complete and Ultra plans will be a much more niche sale, and only recommend the 1tb storage plan if you're currently searching for a secure dropbox alternative, otherwise you'll be paying for digital attic space that you'll probably never use.

We believe the psychology of the "middle option" will win out in this case. We believe that most users will feel that the Basic plan is a little too bare-bones, while the Ultra plan is overkill, which leaves us with the plus plan as the most rational, expert approved default for users who just want to feel safe on the web, without having to over-think it.

What tips help teams make the most effective use of a NordVPN subscription?

When it comes to the tips that help teams make the most effective use of a NordVPN subscription, the secret isn't just about having the tool—it’s about optimizing how you deploy it to keep your workflow smooth and your overhead low. For small, agile teams, getting this right can mean the difference between seamless remote collaboration and a constant IT headache.

Here are our top recommendations for getting the most out of your setup:

  1. Master the Meshnet feature: Instead of just using the VPN for privacy, we think teams should leverage Meshnet to create a secure "virtual office." It lets you link team members' devices directly, making it incredibly easy to share files or access local staging servers without a complex corporate setup.

  1. Audit your needs and switch your pricing plan: Don't pay for what you don't use. If you realize your team doesn't actually need the 1 TB of cloud storage in the Complete tier, we recommend moving to a more affordable pricing plan like Plus. It still keeps the password manager but cuts the fat from your monthly bill.

  1. Ditch the extensions: While browser extensions are convenient, we believe they can be limiting. We suggest sticking to the desktop or mobile apps whenever possible to ensure your entire device’s traffic is encrypted, not just the browser.

  1. Commit to longer cycles: Paying monthly is a massive drain on your budget. By choosing to pay annually rather than monthly, you can lock in significant savings.

  1. Use the promo code wisely: To grab these rates, simply head over to NordVPN’s promo page to get 60% off for 1 year or a massive 74% off for 2 years.

How do NordVPN and Surfshark compare in terms of cost?

When looking at how NordVPN and Surfshark compare in terms of cost, you’re essentially looking at two different philosophies of "value." Both belong to the same parent company now, but they still fight for different types of wallets. Surfshark is almost always the budget king for long-term users, while NordVPN positions itself as a premium service where you pay a bit extra for specialized bells and whistles.

Here’s the breakdown of how they stack up against each other:

  1. Long-term commitment: If you’re willing to lock in for two years, Surfshark is significantly cheaper, often starting around $1.99/mo, whereas NordVPN’s basic entry point usually hovers around $2.99/mo to $3.39/mo.

  1. Short-term flex: Interestingly, if you only need a VPN for a single month, NordVPN is actually often the cheaper choice (around $12.99) compared to Surfshark’s steep monthly rate which can climb over $15.

  1. Device value: This is the big one. Surfshark offers unlimited simultaneous connections, meaning one subscription covers your entire extended family. NordVPN caps you at 10 devices, which is plenty for most, but less "infinite" than Surfshark.

  1. The "renewal trap": In our opinion, you have to watch the renewal rates. As we’ve noted in our detailed NordVPN vs Surfshark comparison, Nord’s price can jump significantly after the initial promo period ends, while Surfshark’s hike is usually a bit more modest.

We think that if you have a massive household with dozens of gadgets, Surfshark is the obvious winner. However, we recommend NordVPN if you don’t mind the extra dollar a month to get access to their faster NordLynx protocol and a much larger server network.
