01 Is Ramp any Good? My expert Review

Having tested numerous expense management platforms, Ramp genuinely stands out—especially for small to medium-sized businesses aiming to simplify expense tracking. Employees at a tech startup I advised quickly warmed up to Ramp's intuitive interface and handy mobile app, effortlessly logging expenses on-the-go and cutting down tedious admin tasks. Plus, its seamless integration with accounting tools like Xero was a real boon for an e-commerce client, making reconciliation a breeze. The virtual vendor cards were also a neat feature, perfect for securely handling subscriptions and online buys.

Still, Ramp isn't without its quirks. One marketing agency client with fluctuating cash flows ran into unexpected card declines due to Ramp's strict cash reserve policies—something businesses with less predictable finances should definitely keep in mind. Customer support was another sticking point; when reimbursement issues popped up for one client, getting timely help proved frustratingly slow. A clearer communication setup would go a long way here.

All things considered though, Ramp remains a solid pick thanks to its user-friendly design, smooth integrations, and secure spending controls—just make sure your cash flow is stable enough and your expectations around customer service response times are realistic.

02 Pros and cons from reviewers

Pros from reviewers

  • Preventive spending controls
Policies are enforced before transactions happen, reducing the need for audits or corrections later and helping companies maintain tighter control over budgets and compliance.

  • Full spend lifecycle coverage
Ramp handles everything from purchase requests to final accounting entries, allowing companies to manage the entire flow of spend within one platform without needing additional tools or integrations.

  • No personal liability for employees
Corporate cards do not require personal guarantees or credit checks, which removes friction for employees and simplifies onboarding for new team members.

  • Transparent pricing structure
Ramp offers a free tier with substantial functionality, making it accessible for companies to start using the platform without committing to large upfront costs.

  • Reliable accounting integrations
Deep integrations with major accounting platforms ensure data flows smoothly, reducing reconciliation work and helping finance teams maintain accurate records.

Cons from reviewers

  • Adjustment period for AP workflows
Teams used to dedicated accounts payable systems may need time to adapt to Ramp’s approach, especially when dealing with more complex invoice structures or approval chains.

  • Travel features still evolving
While functional, the travel module may not meet the needs of companies with advanced travel requirements or those used to specialized travel management platforms.

  • Flat cashback structure
The cashback model is simple but may feel limiting for organizations that want tiered or higher reward structures tied to spending categories.

  • Limited customization in procurement
Companies with niche procurement requirements or strict compliance rules may find the available configuration options insufficient for their specific workflows.

  • Reporting limitations for large teams
Larger organizations may require more advanced analytics and reporting capabilities than what is currently available, particularly when working with complex financial structures.

    *UPDATE* Astonishingly Poor Customer Support!

I had a terrible experience with Ramp's customer service. I made a transaction a month ago that failed, and they still have my ETH. They keep promising a refund within 5-1 working days, but there's no way to communicate with a real person. I felt completely helpless when things went wrong. I was shocked when I finally received my refund after threatening to file a complaint with the FSA and posting about my experience. I appreciate Jules for responding to me, but I still caution others about the potential issues they might face, including spending a lot of time on webchat and waiting for a long time.

Complaints about Ramp? Likely from a Competitor's Payroll!

At my company, we transitioned from the complex Concur system to Ramp, and the improvement was substantial. With Concur, each expense took 30 to 90 seconds to process, but with Ramp, I can process all 25 of my expenses in just 3 minutes. It's incredibly quick for tracking expenses and capturing receipts. However, I find it strange that I'm required to provide a receipt when requesting mileage reimbursement, as I use Ramp to calculate my mileage and there's no receipt for that. The decision to switch to Ramp was made by our finance department, but I was more than willing to help in testing the process.
