The Hobby Plan is an excellent way to try your hand at this option of membership site creation. With a cost of only $9 per month, it offers tremendous value and is well-suited for creators beginning their journey or those with a small side project they wish to test. Included in the Hobby Plan are the core community features, community forum, community classroom, gamification, and you can create an unlimited number of members and courses. The main limitation is that there is only one admin (you) allowed for the Hobby Plan, which can be a problem if you plan to grow your membership site. More notably, you will incur a 10% transaction fee on each sale. While a 10% transaction fee may seem manageable when sales are low, as soon as you begin selling a larger volume of products/services, the transaction fee will eat into your margins. In short, the Hobby Plan makes an excellent entry level tool, however, it won’t last long if your membership site gains momentum.

With the Pro Plan you will also be able to create unlimited admin roles; this feature is critical to scale your team, delegate community management and other tasks to help build out your operation. Additionally, the Pro Plan unlocks all of the premium native livestreaming features on Skool. In essence, the Pro Plan provides you the professional tools you need to treat your Skool community like a core part of your revenue stream and not a sideline. The Hobby and Pro plans offered by Skool differ in only two areas , scale and team management. Hobby Plan customers receive all of the same features as Pro customers (unlimited members, unlimited courses, unlimited gamification) but at an extremely low price. This makes the Hobby Plan very attractive to solo operators, however, there are significant limitations on this plan. For example, Hobby Plan customers are subject to a 10% transaction fee; a fee so large it is likely intended to encourage Hobby Plan users to step up to the Pro Plan. There is also a strict limit of only one administrator per account, which means that if you want to delegate some of the responsibilities associated with managing your growing community, you will have to upgrade to the Pro Plan.
Pro Plan customers receive many of the same features as Hobby customers, including unlimited courses, unlimited gamification and unlimited members, but at a higher price. The biggest advantage to using the Pro Plan is the drastic reduction in the transaction fee from 10% to 2.9%. Based on the fees, it is reasonable to assume that the fee savings would be enough to offset the additional monthly charge to use the Pro Plan and justify upgrading once you reach a level of gross revenue where the savings exceed the increased costs.
In addition to the lower transaction fee, the Pro Plan also provides users with the ability to have multiple administrators and native live streaming capabilities. These features make the Pro Plan ideal for anyone who wants to run live webinars or who needs to delegate moderation duties to other administrators.
If you're still at the pre-launch phase of your business, still testing your product/service, or if you're earning less than $1000/month through your community (or any other way), we believe you should select the Hobby Plan. We view this plan as a great low-cost entry into Skool. As long as you are not exceeding 1,000/month in earnings, you can earn as many members and create as many pieces of content as you'd like all for the relatively inexpensive monthly cost. Yes, there is a 10% platform fee, but when you are at such a low level of earnings, you want to limit your monthly fixed costs. We also believe the Hobby Plan provides an excellent opportunity to test and validate your concept without having to commit too many of your company's resources.
Once your company reaches that point where it's reaching a monthly revenue of between $1500 to $2000, however, you'll definitely want to switch to the Pro Plan. This isn't a choice, it's pure economics. The reduction from a 10% to a 2.9% transaction fee alone saves enough money each year to cover the additional $90/month for the Pro Plan and then some. We feel that spending $99/month for the Pro Plan will save your company hundreds of dollars in fees.
Plus, once you start scaling your company and need to give your employees access to the same community tools that you have, unlimited admin roles become a necessity. We highly recommend the Pro Plan for any business which considers their community a key profit-generating business asset.

Skool does not offer a forever-free plan for creators, and honestly, I don’t believe this is necessarily a negative thing. Most platforms offering strong mobile apps, robust features, and an ad-free experience charge for their services to be able to continue to provide those features.
Instead of a free plan, Skool uses a free trial model. Currently, you may try either the Hobby Plan or the Pro Plan absolutely free for a 14-day period. The trial period offers full functionality of whichever plan you choose, unlimited members, community tools, course hosting, and everything else in between. We encourage you to take advantage of this 2-week trial period as much as possible. Build your community, create and upload your first course module, invite a few founding members to test the waters, and get familiar with the workflow of the platform. This will give you ample time to get a feel for how the platform works and whether or not it fits within your business model before you are charged for the service. In my opinion, the functional free trial offered by Skool has far more value than a perpetually limited “free” plan.
We find the limits of Skool's trial are simple: there aren’t any on the feature front.
Skool doesn’t take a 'we'll cripple the trial' approach; instead, you get full and complete access to whatever plan you choose (Hobby or Pro) for the entire 14 day period. We believe this is an enormous advantage in allowing you to assess the actual level of engagement in your community , you can set up your classroom, run live sessions, utilize the gamification features and so forth without any watermarking or module locking.
The only constraint of the trial, like all other trials, is time. Your 14 days will count down and you’ll need to be prepared to quickly set up your community and invite your beta users to gain an honest assessment. Although you may use every feature during the trial, the trial will end and you will be billed for the first month unless you cancel prior to the end of the 14 day trial. Our advice is to treat the trial like a sprint. You’re going to get the full experience (high octane), however, that full experience will cease once you fail to upgrade to a paid user. No additional restrictions, simply a fixed date.

What does Skool’s subscription cost?
Skool's pricing model has a clear structure, but to get a sense of the total expense to your business, you need to consider both the monthly fee and the transaction fee, which are charged as a percent of each sale.
At present, Skool offers two plans: The Hobby Plan (which is an incredible bargain for the amount of bang you'll get for your buck) is $9 a month. We feel like that's an extraordinary entrance price to start creating a serious community, since it eliminates the biggest obstacle for most new creators: money. But, in order to keep prices so low, Skool will charge you a whopping 10% of every dollar you earn from sales. That is how Skool gets paid if you choose the lower priced plan.
On the other hand, the Pro Plan costs a lot more; it is $99 a month. And although you pay a lot more each month than the Hobby Plan, the transaction fee drops to only 2.9%, which is a much better rate than the Hobby Plan and certainly competitive.
In terms of cost to the creator, we believe the Pro Plan is actually less expensive when your monthly revenue is greater than around $1,500 or $2,000. So, instead of focusing on the difference between $9 and $99, we suggest you focus on the breakeven point for your revenue. A bigger percentage of your sales is lost to the transaction fees as your monthly income increases. Therefore, we believe it makes economic sense to reduce the amount of money lost to these fees as quickly as possible.
What are the main benefits of using Skool for building communities and courses?
Skool has a number of advantages over other tools we have utilized to build communities & courses. In our opinion, the greatest advantage is its simplicity. Skool deliberately integrates the three necessary functions for a community/courses platform; the community forum (for discussion), the course classroom (for teaching), and the calendar function (for planning events) into one clean, simple interface. This reduces the complexity associated with the "Frankensteining" together with multiple different tools such as Kajabi & Zoom (and Facebook groups) - an absolute nightmare to manage, and an equally poor experience for users. With everything organized and streamlined, there will be massive improvements in how engaged members will be in the community.
Another great advantage is the gamification layer. Skool offers a native points/badges/leaderboard system that we believe is absolutely fantastic at encouraging participation and retaining members. We believe this small competitive element encourages members to engage and provide value, versus simply consuming content passively. It also creates a viral loop of engagement, something that many other platforms are unable to create. Lastly, having a native mobile application is another huge plus. We would recommend that if possible, prioritize any tool that has a robust mobile application, as this will ensure that your community can be accessed and engaged through mobile devices, creating a sense of familiarity and relevance in your members’ lives, while providing a high-end feeling to your product.

A strong ROI for creators and coaches can be generated by Skool, however the ROI is created by the user retention and engagement created through the product rather than the low cost of the monthly fee. The true benefit to creators and coaches, is not the fact they can save money at the rate of ten dollars per month. Rather, the benefit comes from the gamification and distraction free environment. Is there a most popular Skool plan among community owners?
The Hobby Plan (9/month) is probably the most popular Skool plan with new community owners in the platform, based on the number of new sign ups to the platform and the platform's economic model. Why? The Hobby Plan is the lowest risk entry point into the platform. A user can start an idea, create a course and invite members to join for less than the price of a latte. That is why the Hobby Plan has the largest number of new users signing up for the platform.
However, the key difference is that the Pro Plan (99/month) is almost definitely the most popular plan amongst profitable, scalable and professional community owners.
