01 What is CircleCI?

CircleCI is a tool that enhances the agility of developer teams, allowing them to work independently and efficiently. It eliminates the need for waiting on others to complete tasks, as it uses an automated pipeline for code deployment once a feature is completed or a ticket is processed. This continuous integration process ensures only clean code is deployed, guaranteeing high-quality code delivery. By using CircleCI, businesses can accelerate growth and save money.

Some users have reported that despite having multiple contributors to a repository, they can only add a limited number of them as users, and they are unable to add users who aren't contributors to the repo

  • Cluttered interface at lower resolutions
The interface can become cluttered when filtering a project by Branch Name at lower resolutions, particularly on mobile devices or browser tabs

  • Limited third-party tool integrations
Despite its powerful features, some users believe that CircleCI should offer more integrations with third-party tools

  • Lack of support for multi-project repos

Scales from Simple CI to Full Pipeline

CircleCI is one of the few CI tools I’ve used where adding reusable orbs actually saved time instead of creating more maintenance work. The Slack notifications are useful, the insights dashboard helps identify slow jobs, and while debugging remote Docker issues can still be annoying, the overall developer experience is smooth

    Orbs, Insights, and Solid DX

We moved to CircleCI when our old CI started slowing us down, and the biggest win has been flexible workflows with approval steps before production deploys. Being able to split jobs by branch and environment keeps things clean, and the free year we accessed through Joinsecret helped us get set up without rushing the budget

    Flexible Workflows with Approvals

I like how CircleCI handles Docker-based workflows since we build and test containerized services on every commit, and the workflow visualization makes it easy to spot where a job is failing. The docs are good, although some advanced config examples could be clearer for edge cases

    Config-as-Code + Faster Pipelines

CircleCI has been a solid fit for our team because the config-as-code setup is easy to version alongside the app, and the parallel test execution noticeably cut our pipeline time. It took a bit of trial and error to tune caching properly, but once we did, builds became much more predictable

12-Month Free Deal for Migration and Standardization

Also used the CircleCi Discount: 12 months free deal via Joinsecret for a migration from another CI tool, and it was helpful while we cleaned up configs and standardized on a few orbs, though you still need to invest time in good pipeline design to get the best results

12-Month Free Deal for New Service Ramp-Up

We grabbed the CircleCi Discount: 12 months free deal through Joinsecret when spinning up a new service, and it gave us breathing room to tune resource classes and caching without worrying about costs right away

    SSH Debugging with Helpful Artifacts

The SSH debugging into a running job is clutch when something fails only in CI, and having artifacts and test results surfaced in the UI makes it easy to share what went wrong with the team

    Contexts for Centralized Secret Management

We use contexts to manage secrets across multiple projects, and it’s been a nice balance between central control and not having to duplicate environment variables everywhere

Smoother Docker Builds and Quick Reruns

Remote Docker and Docker layer caching made our image builds much less painful, and the “rerun from failed” option has saved me from re-running a whole pipeline more times than I can count

    Orbs for Cleaner Integrations

Orbs have been a time-saver for common stuff like AWS ECR and Slack notifications, and it feels cleaner than maintaining a pile of custom scripts in every repo
