My top 3 GitHub alternatives
By Jean-Loup Karst, Co-founder @Secret
I have been examining different options instead of Github and found three that stand out: Azure DevOps, Userback, and Mergify.
Azure DevOps
Azure DevOps is a Microsoft application that focuses on making it easier for teams to work together throughout the entire software development lifecycle by providing a set of tools that goes beyond just source control. Azure DevOps provides unlimited private repositories, cloud pipelines, and great integration capabilities. Teams can use Azure Boards to keep track of their projects, Azure Repos to store their code, and Azure Pipelines to automate the continuous integration and deployment process. Teams can use Git or Team Foundation Version Control (TFVC), according to the needs of their organization.
Azure DevOps is a nice option for organizations wanted another source control solution aside from GitHub for teams already using Microsoft tools or for those that want project on longer term projects on a platform that can integrate with project management features. While GitHub has solidified its position as the preferred collaboration tool for open source, Azure DevOps is designed for enterprise environments where integrated Microsoft services and project management capabilities are more critical for long term project.
Userback
Userback is another excellent alternative to Github. It's a user feedback platform that allows developers to collect and manage feedback on their websites and applications. It's particularly useful for web development projects where user experience is paramount. For example, a developer can use Userback to gather real-time feedback from users during the testing phase of a website or application. This feedback can then be used to make necessary adjustments before the final release.
Mergify
Mergify is an automation tool that helps developers manage their pull requests on Github. While it's not a complete alternative to Github, it can be used in conjunction with it to streamline the development process. For example, Mergify can automatically merge pull requests when certain conditions are met, saving developers time and reducing the risk of human error. It can also prioritize pull requests based on predefined criteria.
List of Alternatives to GitHub
Here are some of GitHub's top competitors in the Web Development category: Azure DevOps, Userback, Mergify or CircleCI.
Azure DevOps brings value by providing a comprehensive platform for software development, collaboration, and deployment. It offers a range of tools and services to streamline the entire application lifecycle, from planning and coding to testing and deployment. With Azure DevOps, teams can work together effectively, automate workflows, track progress, and ensure high-quality software delivery.

Exploring the Benefits of Azure DevOps Services with Agrxis
My overall experience with Azure DevOps Services has been positive. I value the comprehensive set of tools it offers for project management and team collaboration. I appreciate the customization options, which allow me to tailor my workflows to my project's unique needs. The seamless integration with other Microsoft tools has helped streamline my work and increase productivity. Despite its complexity, I've found the documentation and community resources helpful in overcoming challenges. I'm impressed with how Azure DevOps Services has benefited my team and me in our development projects. I value its features that cater to various aspects of software development, such as project planning, code management, testing, deployment, and monitoring. Its collaboration tools are particularly useful for facilitating smooth communication and coordination among team members, including those working remotely. The platform's continuous integration and deployment capabilities simplify our software delivery pipeline, enabling us to deliver new features and updates on schedule. However, I've occasionally encountered deficient or unclear documentation, making it difficult to debug issues or understand certain features.

Why is Azure DevOps a good alternative to GitHub?
As a software developer, I find GitHub to be a great alternative to Azure DevOps. GitHub provides a user-friendly interface and is largely considered the standard for version control, making it easier for me to collaborate with other developers. It also offers excellent documentation and community support which can be crucial when troubleshooting issues. Additionally, GitHub has an integrated issue tracking system that makes it simple to track bugs and feature requests, all in one place. Moreover, GitHub's extensive integration with third-party tools gives me the flexibility to customize my workflow according to project needs. Lastly, its pricing model offers free private repositories which is a significant advantage for small teams or individual developers.

August 10, 2024
Why is Userback a good alternative to GitHub?
As a developer, I find GitHub an excellent alternative to Userback because it provides a comprehensive platform for version control and collaboration. With GitHub, I can work on projects with multiple developers without worrying about overwriting each other's changes. It allows us to create separate branches for our individual contributions, which we can later merge into the main codebase.
Moreover, GitHub offers an issue tracking feature that makes it easier to manage bug reports and feature requests. This is particularly valuable in open-source projects, where users can contribute by reporting issues or suggesting improvements.
Lastly, GitHub's integration with other development tools like Travis CI and Jenkins enhances productivity by automating tests and deployment processes. While Userback is great for collecting user feedback, GitHub provides a more holistic solution for software development.
What are the differences between Userback and GitHub?
I have used both GitHub and Userback extensively and found that they serve different purposes. GitHub is a platform primarily used by developers for version control and collaboration. It allows teams to work together on projects from anywhere. It's mainly used for code but can be used for any types of files.
On the other hand, Userback is a customer feedback tool that allows users to provide visual feedback on websites, applications, and designs. It's a tool more focused on gathering client or user insights rather than collaborative development.
In summary, GitHub is more developer-centric, focusing on code development and collaboration, while Userback is geared towards collecting user feedback on digital products. Both have their unique benefits depending on the needs of the project.

Streamlining Testing with Mergify: An Essential Tool for Software Testers
As a software tester, I've found Mergify to be an essential tool in our toolkit. Its automatic merging feature has made our testing process much smoother and more efficient
June 8, 2024
Why is Mergify a good alternative to GitHub?
I find GitHub a good alternative to Mergify because it provides a comprehensive platform for version control and collaboration. While Mergify focuses mainly on automating the merging process, GitHub offers a broader set of features. It allows developers to review code, manage projects, host and review code, and build software alongside millions of other developers. The in-built GitHub Actions feature can be used to automate workflows, including merging pull requests. This eliminates the need for an external tool like Mergify. Additionally, GitHub's large user base and active community make it easier to find help or resources when needed. Its integration capabilities with various tools and platforms enhance its utility. Therefore, for its extensive features beyond just merging, I regard GitHub as a solid alternative to Mergify.
What are the differences between Mergify and GitHub?
I use both GitHub and Mergify, and I've noticed several differences between them. GitHub is a platform that hosts repositories for version control and collaboration, allowing multiple people to work on projects together. It provides tools for managing changes to projects and coordinating work among team members.
Mergify, on the other hand, is a tool that automates the merging of pull requests on GitHub. It helps to streamline the workflow by automatically merging, updating, or commenting on pull requests based on certain conditions set by the user. While GitHub facilitates collaboration and version control, Mergify enhances these capabilities by automating certain processes within the platform. Therefore, Mergify operates within GitHub but offers different functionalities.

I’ve been using Jira for project management recently, and honestly, it’s just a genuinely good product. When you are managing moving parts and need to keep everything on track, having a tool that is actually useful—rather than just another administrative burden—makes all the difference. One of the biggest surprises for me was the onboarding experience. Powerful project management software usually comes with a reputation for being overly complex, but Jira actually has a very easy learning curve. It’s incredibly easy to learn and understand right out of the gate. You don't have to spend weeks reading documentation to figure out how to set up a sprint or manage a backlog; the core mechanics just make sense. A huge part of why it's so accessible comes down to the front-end experience. It features a really nice, clean user interface that gets out of your own way. I absolutely love the design and the customization options. You can tailor your boards, fields, and workflows to fit your exact operational style, rather than being forced to adapt your process to fit the software. The real magic happens when you start expanding its capabilities. Jira connects seamlessly with just about every other app you might be using. By hooking it up to the rest of your tech stack, it adds so much more functionality, turning it from a simple task tracker into a centralized hub for your entire workflow. Overall, it’s a highly effective platform that successfully balances deep customization with an easy-to-digest design. Highly recommended.

Sawyer: The Essential Software for Summer Camps and Classes
As a novice in teaching summer camps and children's classes, I am grateful for finding Sawyer. It enables me to showcase my brand professionally and is cost-effective. The software is user-friendly with a minimal learning curve. When I initiated a summer camp for kids, Sawyer simplified the process by providing all the necessary features, even those I hadn't thought of. They continue to introduce more features, especially during the pandemic when businesses had to shift to online classes. The onboarding process was uncomplicated. Both the front-end and back-end interfaces are modern and similar to Apple's design, making it easy for me and the users. Other software I tried were outdated and cumbersome. Their customer service is very supportive. I've been using the software for nearly two summers now and I can't think of anything I dislike. I do wish I could embed my Registration page on my website myself, but Sawyer does it swiftly so it's not a significant issue. I chose Sawyer for its ease of use, Apple-like.

Why is Sawyer a good alternative to GitHub?
As a software developer, I find Sawyer to be a great alternative to GitHub. One of the main reasons is its user-friendly interface which makes project management and version control much easier. It provides a very intuitive and visual representation of the code development process, allowing me to better track changes and understand the work flow.
Another advantage is the enhanced collaboration features. With Sawyer, you can easily assign tasks, comment on code, and share updates with your team. This fosters a more collaborative environment, which is essential for successful software development.
Lastly, Sawyer gives you more control over your repositories. You can choose who has access to your projects and what permissions they have. This added layer of security is something that I truly appreciate.
What are the differences between Sawyer and GitHub?
I have tested both Sawyer and GitHub, and I can say that they are quite different in their functions. Sawyer is a software primarily used for managing and scheduling classes, camps, and other educational events. It provides a platform for businesses to list their programs and for parents or students to easily find and book these activities.
Alternatively, GitHub is a web-based hosting service for version control using Git. It's primarily used for computer code. It offers all of the distributed version control and source code management (SCM) functionality of Git as well as adding its own features. It provides access control and several collaboration features such as bug tracking, feature requests, task management, continuous integration and wikis for every project.
Therefore, while both are useful tools, they serve very different purposes - one is tailored towards educational programming while the other is oriented towards software development.

Reliable performance
I run a marketing site that gets visitors from all over, and Netlify has been really solid so far. Pages load quickly no matter where people are coming from, and I haven’t run into downtime issues. Even during a campaign launch when traffic spiked more than expected, everything held up.
