Frédéric Laffont

My top 3 SumUp alternatives

By Frédéric Laffont, Chief Technology Officer

If I were replacing SumUp, I’d start with Square Point of Sale, Stripe, and Shopify; I also keep Revolut and Paymo in mind depending on whether I need banking or invoicing-plus-time-tracking.
1. Square Point of Sale Logo

Square Point of Sale

For my mobile pop-ups/counter service, I find that Square Point of Sale meets the needs as it is a hybrid POS system for both payment processing & day to day operations. The POS allows me to process "Swipe", Chip", "Tap" transactions along with managing inventory by category through a built-in item grid, note/modify orders to prevent loss & utilize notes & modifiers. Additionally, I appreciate that the transaction history & receipt options exist within the same workflow as well as the ability to manage employees when I have rotating staff. The pricing structure is clear; In-Store - 2.6% + $0.15 Online - 2.9% + $0.30 Invoice - 3.3% + $0.30 Manually Entered - 3.5% + $0.15

2. Stripe Logo

Stripe

Stripe is the one I reach for when payments have to live inside a website or app. I can lean on a customizable checkout, subscription billing, and fraud prevention, then verify what happened using payment analytics and reporting. The pricing model is also easy to reason about for card charges: Standard (pay-as-you-go) is 2.9% + $0.30 per successful card charge, with an Enterprise tier listed as custom pricing.

3. Shopify Logo

Shopify

Shopify wins for me when “payments” is only one part of the job and I also need a real storefront. I can edit homepage sections, navigation, and product pages in the theme editor without touching code, then connect domain management and run sales across channels. It’s priced like an e-commerce platform (not just a card reader): Basic is $39/month, Shopify is $105/month, Advanced is $399/month, and Plus is $2300/month.
