01 Is Udemy any Good? My expert Review

For roughly two years I have utilized Udemy, and my overall experience has been quite good and also very bad. On the positive side, last year I completed a python course, which was only fifteen dollars when it went on sale, and it has greatly assisted me in automating many tasks that I do at my job. The course included download-able resource files and hands-on exercises that I could use right away with the projects that I am working on.

On the other hand, the lack of consistency with regards to quality has been very frustrating. A couple of weeks ago I took an outdated course that had methods of digital marketing from 2018 that are no longer effective due to changes in the current algorithms. The instructor has not updated the course materials even though students have repeatedly complained about this in the review section of the course. This has clearly shown that one of the largest downfalls of Udemy is that anyone can make a course, and there is very little quality control.

I like how easy it is to navigate the website and I like that once you purchase a course, you have life time access to the course material. I recently went back to my excel course that I took six months prior to refresh some of the formulas. I think the mobile app works pretty well for viewing video's on my daily commute; however, occasionally the mobile app will freeze up when trying to download a video.

If I were to give advice for utilizing Udemy, I would tell people to always read the latest reviews for the course that they are thinking of taking and also look into the instructors background and qualifications, as well as to never pay the full price for the course. If you are selective, I believe that Udemy can provide you with excellent value for your money, but you need to carefully evaluate each course before making the purchase.

  • Lifetime Access
One-time purchase grants unlimited lifetime access to course materials, including future updates, allowing learners to revisit content and refresh knowledge whenever needed

Cons from reviewers

  • Inconsistent Course Quality
The open marketplace model means anyone can create and publish courses, leading to significant variations in teaching quality, content accuracy, and production value across the platform

  • Limited Instructor Support
Udemy takes a substantial revenue share (up to 50-75% depending on how students find the course) while providing minimal marketing support or guaranteed visibility for instructors, making it difficult to build a sustainable income

  • No Accredited Certifications
Certificates of completion hold little professional weight as they are not accredited by recognized educational institutions, limiting their value for career advancement or formal credentials

  • Frequent Deep Discounting
Udemy's aggressive promotion strategy with constant sales and discounts (courses often drop from $199 to $9.99) devalues course content and trains customers to never pay full price

  • Minimal Student Engagement Tools
The platform lacks robust community features, live interaction capabilities, and cohort-based learning options that foster meaningful student-instructor relationships and peer-to-peer collaboration

04 How Udemy compare to similar software?

Skillshare and Udemy are two leading platforms in the online learning space, offering a vast array of courses across various subjects. Udemy and DataCamp are two leading online learning platforms, each offering robust features for learners, but they cater to distinct learning needs and styles. When deciding which platform aligns best with your educational goals, it’s essential to consider several key differences between them.

The primary distinction lies in the focus of their course offerings. Udemy is a broad platform that provides courses across a wide range of subjects, from programming and business to personal development and creative arts. It is a marketplace model where instructors create courses, meaning you have access to a diverse array of topics, but the quality and depth of courses can vary. If you're looking for flexibility and a variety of subjects, Udemy might be your go-to platform. You can pick and choose individual courses to develop different skills at your own pace.

In contrast, DataCamp is specialized in data science and analytics education. It focuses on a structured, hands-on learning experience...
