01 Is 1Password any Good? My expert Review

As someone who works in cybersecurity and has tried many password management tools, I can say without a doubt that I have always felt that 1Password has been very dependable and a safe choice overall. In my experience, it has made it easier for me and my colleagues to manage our passwords, especially with teams or family. For instance, when I started to use 1Password with my team it was advantageous to be able to securely share logins for collaborative tools like GitHub or AWS, which really helped our flow.

I especially like the advanced security functionalities like Watchtower and the Password Generator since they have been very successful for me in the past for identifying vulnerabilities proactively and ensuring all of my passwords were in good, strong security-compliant standing. For example, once Watchtower captured a compromised password from a now expired account and informed me so I was able to respond to it quickly before it was "too late" or something bad happened.

That being said, I did have some friction during the initial setup of the desktop platforms. I did not find it intuitive to log into the web interface, especially when onboarding colleagues who are not well versed with technology. Also, transitioning from the lifetime license to a subscription billing option with 1Password 7 was mildly frustrating for me personally; it felt more the result of a sudden business decision than an improvement as a result of user experience.

Despite these minor setbacks, the multi-platform compatibility and outstanding customer service that I have experienced thus far have left a very positive impression on me. Any time I have had a question or faced an issue about specific features or areas, the support team has responded in a timely or reasonable manner and provided complete responses.

In conclusion, although there is some room for improvement for brand consistency with user experience and account transitions. I truly believe 1Password is at the top of the secure password management solutions due to its strong security features and responsive customer service and support.

02 Pros and cons from reviewers

Pros from reviewers

• Sharing options
1Password allows users to share passwords securely with team members or family. The business subscription comes with a license for a personal account per user, which can also be shared with family

  • Multi-platform compatibility
1Password is compatible with various popular operating systems and browsers. It can be used on mobile apps, browser extensions, and Windows Desktop app, all of which are constantly synced

  • Excellent customer support
1Password provides excellent customer support, with representatives going above and beyond to assist users with their queries and issues.

  • Secure and easy to manage
1Password is a secure tool that simplifies the management of users and access. It enhances internal security protocols and makes password management easier with its user-friendly admin panel

  • Advanced features
1Password offers advanced features like the Watchtower, which identifies weak, duplicate, and expiring passwords, the Password Generator, which assists in creating new passwords, and an advanced search that can help locate specific passwords or usernames

Cons from reviewers

  • Lock-in with Family account
1Password proposes to link the Family account to the work account, creating a lock-in situation. If a user changes jobs and the new company does not use 1Password, transferring the personal vault can be a nuisance

  • Difficulty in setting up 1Password account on desktop
The process of setting up a 1Password account on a desktop to sync and save passwords can be inconvenient. This process requires logging in on the web first, which requires an account, creating a somewhat circular problem

  • Transition issues with 1Password 7
Some users have reported problems transitioning to 1Password 7, particularly if they previously held a lifetime license. This transition seems to be aimed at converting lifetime license holders to a monthly subscription, which has caused some software malfunctions

  • Inconsistent user experience across platforms
While 1Password is available on various platforms, the user experience is not consistent across all of them. For instance, the mobile version has significantly fewer features compared to the browser and desktop app versions

  • Confusion in transferring passwords between vaults
Transferring passwords between vaults can be confusing, particularly for less tech-savvy users. This feature could be made more prominent to improve user experience.

    Smooth Onboarding with Permissions

1Password has been solid for onboarding new hires because Travel Mode and vault permissions make it easier to keep access clean and limited. We also found a 14 day trial for the Business plan through Joinsecret, which gave us enough time to test it properly before committing

    Watchtower Security Alerts

I’ve used 1Password for both personal and work accounts, and the thing I appreciate most is Watchtower. It flags weak or reused passwords and also tells me when a site I use has a security issue, which is the kind of reminder I probably wouldn’t keep up with on my own

    Shared Vaults Replace Spreadsheets

We switched our small team to 1Password mainly for the shared vaults and it cleaned up a messy mix of spreadsheets and Slack messages. I like that I can decide who sees what without making the setup complicated, and the browser extension catches logins reliably most of the time

    Family Sharing That Just Works

    Integrated 2FA OTP Copy

The UI is clean and fast, but what really sold me was the “copy one-time password” flow for 2FA and the fact it’s integrated, so I’m not bouncing between an authenticator app and the password manager
