The free plan is really a "test-the-waters" sandbox experience. It's great for a small solo-preneur (or hobbyist) with very little going on -- think at most 3 social media platforms. You'll have all of the core features that allow you to schedule posts as well as a post cap of 10 on each platform; enough to keep your small social presence alive and kicking. BUT - let's face it, "basic analytics" is basically the bare minimum. Your view will be limited to a 30 day history so you won't be able to see much in terms of how people are interacting with your content. You won't be able to view anything in regards to hashtags either. This is a great way to check out Buffer's UI and AI assistant without having to pay a thing...but you'll reach a plateau quickly if you're planning on growing an actual brand. What is the difference between Buffer’s Free and Essentials?

Ultimately, the core difference between Buffer's free and essential plans comes down to one thing – do you intend to simply maintain your online presence, or build a community? Both plans allow you to utilize the AI assistant as well as create a basic landing page. However, the free plan is very limited in terms of how many social media platforms you can manage (only three) and the number of posts you can schedule at any given time (just ten). While we believe the free plan is suitable for someone who only wants to make sure their LinkedIn profile doesn't appear abandoned, we believe the limitations will be a significant roadblock to content marketing for anyone serious about creating content.


Once you upgrade to the essentials plan, you'll have the option to schedule an unlimited number of posts, as well as access to the advanced analytics. To us, advanced analytics — particularly the data regarding engagement — (such as identifying when the best times to post based on your followers' behaviors) is the true reason to spend $6 per month. The essentials plan will also provide you with the ability to use a hashtag manager and the capability to schedule your first comment on Instagram, which cannot be done using the free plan.

What is the difference between Buffer’s Essentials and Team?

It's a matter of who is using Buffer (how many) rather than what you can do with Buffer. The publishing tools are very similar in both options. Essentials is great for running one person's social media accounts and reporting on those. It has all the advanced analytics, hashtag research, and unlimited posting you'll ever need to build out a personal brand. But once you have someone else assisting you, or working alongside you, Essentials quickly turns into a disaster as you will be forced to share a single login account.


We believe that the addition of multiple users, and most importantly, approval workflows, make the Team option a game-changer for businesses and teams of people managing their own social media. We believe that the ability to set permission levels for example, where a junior user can create drafts of posts, but cannot publish them without your review is worth the additional $6 per channel by itself. It prevents errors from happening before they occur.


In general, we would recommend the Team option for small agencies and teams due to the fact that it includes branded reports. As an agency, when you send PDF reports to clients, you certainly don't want Buffer's logo across every page of your report, you want to include your own company branding. For us, Essentials is for the individual creating content, and Team is for the business. If you're earning income off clients, then you should definitely go with Team.

Which plan should I choose for my company?

Ultimately the choice of which plan is best for your company will depend on how many people are working for you and whether you want to avoid social media "Reply-All" disasters. As a solo founder, the Essentials plan may be the best option for you. The Essentials plan has all of the advanced analytics and hashtag tracking capabilities of Sprout Social that will make you appear as though you know what you are doing; however, the Essentials plan is specifically designed to work for a single user. I believe this to be the sweet spot for solo founders who do not wish to spend hours reviewing social media activity and are not prepared to manage a whole department.


On the other hand, if you add even one additional employee to your team, I would recommend moving directly to the Team plan. I truly believe that the $12 cost per channel for approval workflows is a relatively minor expense to the peace of mind that comes from knowing that a post will be reviewed by someone before it is posted. I have seen numerous small businesses regret not having a second review process when a simple typo gets picked up by the wrong news outlet. Having the ability to set specific permission levels allows you to give an intern the authority to create drafts of posts while you maintain the ultimate authority to publish those posts.


In general, the biggest determining factor for most businesses is the reporting functionality. If you need to report on the growth of your social media presence to a board or client, the customized reports available through the Team plan are an absolute requirement. You cannot put a price on appearing legitimate. Based upon my experience, I would recommend using the Team plan if you anticipate hiring anyone this year. This will save you the hassle of migrating your accounts at some future date.

Yes, Buffer has a free plan, and we believe it is one of the most generous free plans available in social media management today. Most companies use their free trial to show off what they can do before making you pay, but Buffer allows you to use a good portion of its toolset for free by simply signing up. The core features are all included in the free version, including scheduling tools, a visual calendar to help manage your content, and their artificial intelligence (AI) assistant to support content creation when writer’s block hits.


The start page feature is probably the most underutilized part of the free version. Essentially, the start page is a customizable landing page for your social bios. We believe it’s an excellent starting point for individuals building a personal brand or small business that doesn’t want to spend money on a full site. We also found the interface remains just as clean and snappy as the paid versions, so you won’t feel like you’re using a lite version that feels clunky.

While the free plan will provide adequate basic automation, the most obvious drawback is the limit to how many social media accounts you can connect (only three). For someone who wants to be the go-to person on LinkedIn, Instagram, X and TikTok simultaneously, you've already hit a wall.


Also, the number of posts in a queue for each channel (a total of ten) is a major headache. This is the largest limitation of the free plan to us, since it makes it necessary to log-in to Buffer every couple of days to 're-load' your queue, which somewhat defeats the purpose of long-term planning. As far as analytics, the free plan leaves much to be desired. A thirty day history of your activity is provided, but I believe that you'll find yourself missing some of the more detailed analytics, such as 'when is the best time to post' and 'who are your audiences', that are available with the paid plans.


I would only suggest using the free plan if you are managing an extremely small and/or personal presence online. For any business looking to use Buffer as a tool to manage their online presence, I do not believe that the limited number of features (such as no hashtag manager, and/or first comment scheduler), that are included in the free plan, will provide a smooth workflow, and may cause frustration due to the fact that you'll be limited by the number of accounts and posts you can manage. The free plan will serve as a good starting point, however, I believe you'll soon feel the confines of the platform.

However, from our viewpoint, the decision becomes a lot more difficult when you are handling dozens of social media accounts. If you have twenty clients as an agency, paying $12.00 per channel for the Team Plan is going to be a substantial expense each month. At this point you must determine whether or not the ease of use of Buffer is worth the additional cost versus using one of the all-in-one tools that may provide a flat rate for agencies. We believe that for the majority of users, the answer is still yes, because the user experience is so clean and intuitive that you will actually use it.


We would recommend Buffer if you dislike using software that feels like a chore. To us, the ROI comes from the hours you will save by not having to fight through a cluttered User Interface.
