My top 3 InDesign alternatives
By Shubhashree Halder, Content Manager
Illustrator
If you're looking to create vector based graphics, Adobe Illustrator is a great option. It's excellent for creating anything from logos to icons, typography, drawings, and complex illustrations for any media format. If you're going to create a logo and you plan on plastering it everywhere in different sized mediums from small business cards to giant billboards, you'd want take advantage of Illustrator's ability to have art scale for size without losing quality (other programs, like Photoshop, don't allow for this).
Although you could also use Illustrator as an alternative to Adobe InDesign for basic layout or single-page designs, InDesign was created for multi-page documents or layouts (at some point you will want to use InDesign for magazines, brochures, or books). Illustrator is better at creating detailed graphic elements and scalable vector artwork while InDesign has superior tools for managing text, multi-page layouts, and print ready layouts. So, if your project is primarily illustrating or single page graphics, then Illustrator would work for you. However, if you are creating long documents (of any sort) or complex layouts, InDesign would typically be best.
Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop is another powerful tool that is primarily used for photo editing and manipulation. However, it also offers features for digital painting, animation, and graphic design. For example, if you're working on a project that requires retouching and manipulation of photos, Photoshop would be your go-to tool. It's also great for creating web designs and 3D artwork.
Canva
Canva is a user-friendly online design tool that's great for creating social media graphics, presentations, posters, and other visual content. It comes with thousands of templates which makes it easy for beginners to create professional-looking designs. For instance, if you need to quickly create an attractive Instagram post or a presentation slide, Canva can help you get the job done in no time.
List of Alternatives to InDesign
Here are some of InDesign's top competitors in the Design category: Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva or Figma.
Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor and design software developed by Adobe Systems. It allows users to create and edit logos, illustrations, and graphic designs with precision and flexibility. Features include typography, drawing tools, color processing, and creative effects.

Exploring Illustrator: A Worthwhile Investment
I was thrilled to take advantage of the free trial offer for Illustrator! It gave me a chance to explore the software before making a commitment. Yes, there was a fee to cancel, but considering the high-quality features and capabilities of this application, I found it to be a worthwhile investment. I'm definitely looking forward to using this application again. What a dynamic company!

Why is Illustrator a good alternative to InDesign?
As a graphic designer, I find InDesign to be a great alternative to Illustrator. While both are products of Adobe and can be used for graphic design, they serve different purposes. Illustrator is primarily used for creating and editing vector-based drawings such as logos and graphics. On the other hand, InDesign is built specifically for layout design projects like magazines, brochures, posters, and eBooks. Its tools allow for easy manipulation of text and images within a predefined layout. It also supports multi-page projects, which is not an option in Illustrator. Additionally, InDesign offers better typesetting capabilities which makes it ideal for working with large amounts of text. So, if you're working on a project that requires detailed layout design or involves extensive text manipulation, InDesign might be the better choice over Illustrator.
What are the differences between Illustrator and InDesign?
I often find myself working with both Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator, two powerful design tools with distinct features. While they may seem similar, there are key differences that distinguish them. Primarily, InDesign is a desktop publishing software best suited for creating multi-page documents like books, magazines, brochures and reports. It excels in text formatting, layout design and prepress tasks.
Alternatively, Illustrator is a vector-based drawing tool designed for creating and editing graphics. It's ideal for designing logos, icons, sketches, typography and complex illustrations for any medium. Unlike InDesign, Illustrator doesn't handle multi-page layouts as efficiently but it offers more flexibility in terms of graphic creation and manipulation.
In summary, while there is some overlap in their functionalities, InDesign is more specialized in layout design and text handling whereas Illustrator shines in creating and editing vector-based graphics.
Photoshop is a graphics editing software developed by Adobe Systems. It allows users to create, enhance, or edit images, artwork, and illustrations. It offers a range of tools for photo manipulation, retouching, color correction, and graphic design.

Adaptable Photoshop: Tailoring the Software to Suit My Needs

Why is Photoshop a good alternative to InDesign?
I find InDesign to be a great alternative to Photoshop primarily because it is specifically designed for layout and typesetting. Unlike Photoshop, which is primarily used for photo editing and creating raster images, InDesign excels in creating multi-page documents such as books, magazines, brochures, and portfolios with ease. It allows me to manage a large number of pages with automatic page numbering, master pages, and the ability to link text boxes. The grid system in InDesign also makes it easier to align elements consistently across different pages. Furthermore, InDesign supports vector graphics which means I can scale images without losing quality. While both have their unique strengths, if the project involves heavy text layout or multi-page documents, I would choose InDesign over Photoshop.
What are the differences between Photoshop and InDesign?
I have used both Adobe InDesign and Photoshop extensively and can attest to their unique features. Photoshop, as a raster graphics software, is primarily designed for creating and editing images. It excels in photo manipulation, digital painting, and graphic design where detailed image editing is required. However, it's not ideal for handling large amounts of text or creating multi-page layouts.
On the other hand, InDesign is a desktop publishing software that excels in layout design. It's perfect for designing magazines, newspapers, books, brochures or anything that combines text with images and needs to be outputted in high quality for print. It provides more control over typography and has better tools for long-form text management. Unlike Photoshop, InDesign isn't designed for detailed image editing or creating original artwork from scratch.
Canva is a browser-based design platform that makes it easy to create professional visuals without needing advanced design skills. It combines drag-and-drop editing with templates, stock assets, and increasingly powerful AI tools for content generation and editing.

Why is Canva a good alternative to InDesign?
I find Adobe InDesign to be a superior alternative to Canva due to its advanced features and capabilities. While Canva is known for its user-friendly interface and simplicity, InDesign takes design possibilities to another level. It offers a higher degree of control over every element in a design, making it ideal for complex projects that require precision. Its vast array of tools allows for more detailed and professional layouts. Moreover, InDesign supports a lot of file formats which makes it easier for collaboration and sharing. It also excels in handling multi-page designs like magazines and books efficiently. Although it has a steeper learning curve compared to Canva, the flexibility and robustness it provides make it worth the effort.
What are the differences between Canva and InDesign?
I have used both InDesign and Canva for various design projects. The most noticeable difference is that InDesign is a professional-grade software from Adobe, typically used by graphic designers, while Canva is an online tool more suited to beginners or those needing quick, simple designs. InDesign has a steeper learning curve but offers more control and advanced features. It allows for precise layout control, text editing and handling large files, making it ideal for creating multi-page documents like magazines or books.
On the other hand, Canva is user-friendly with a drag-and-drop interface and a wide range of pre-designed templates. It's great for social media posts, posters, or small-scale print projects. However, it lacks the advanced capabilities of InDesign. Another key difference is pricing: InDesign requires a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud, while Canva has a free version with optional paid upgrades for more features.

Text Editor Bug: A Major Issue with FlipSnack
I had a really bad experience with Flipsnack's customer service. It seemed like it was outsourced overseas and the representatives didn't know much about the product. There was no phone number for me to call, which wasted my time. The basic functions of the software were okay, but I had a recurring problem with the view in the editor mode being different from the published mode. Specifically, there was a bug with the text box formatting and I couldn't access the HTML to fix it. Despite sending multiple screenshots showing the problem, the customer service kept giving me unsatisfactory answers, often blaming me for the issue. They finally admitted to the bug, but it was a frustrating experience. The vendor responded to my complaint, apologizing for the bad experience and promising to fix the issue. They said they couldn't reproduce the same problem on their end, but assured me they wouldn't ignore the inconvenience I had faced. They promised to do their best to fix the issue and improve.

Why is Flipsnack a good alternative to InDesign?
I believe Flipsnack is a great alternative to InDesign because it offers a more user-friendly interface. While InDesign is powerful and versatile, it can be complex and overwhelming for beginners or those who only need to create simple designs. Flipsnack, on the other hand, is incredibly intuitive and easy to use, even for those with no design experience. It's also web-based, so you don't need to download or install any software. This makes it easily accessible from any device with an internet connection. Additionally, Flipsnack offers a wide range of templates which can be customized according to your needs. Its pricing plans are also more affordable compared to InDesign's subscription model. So, for those looking for a simpler, more affordable design tool with sufficient capabilities, Flipsnack is a solid choice.
What are the differences between Flipsnack and InDesign?
I have tested both Flipsnack and InDesign, and I've found that they offer quite different experiences. InDesign, developed by Adobe, is a professional-grade software used for creating all kinds of digital and print layouts. It's ideal for professionals who need advanced features for graphic design, typography, and page layout.
Alternatively, Flipsnack is an online tool that lets you easily create and publish digital flipbooks. It's more user-friendly and accessible for beginners or those without much design experience. While it doesn't have as many advanced features as InDesign, it does offer a simpler interface and the unique flipbook format.
In terms of pricing, InDesign typically requires a monthly subscription as part of Adobe's Creative Cloud suite. Flipsnack offers a freemium model with the option of paid upgrades for additional features.

Experiencing Lucidpress: A Trial Subscription Rollercoaster
I had an interesting experience with Lucidpress recently. I had signed up for a trial subscription and decided to cancel before it ended. However, I was auto-billed, which was a surprise. I reached out to their support team twice to request a refund. I received an email stating my subscription had expired, but no mention of a refund. I'm still waiting to hear back from the support team, but I'm hopeful they'll resolve the issue soon. It's been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I'm optimistic about Lucidpress. I'm eager to see how they handle this situation, as it will really show if they are a trustworthy and reliable website.

Why is Marq (ex. Lucidpress) a good alternative to InDesign?
I find Lucidpress to be a fantastic alternative to InDesign because of its user-friendly interface and cost-effectiveness. Unlike InDesign which requires a steep learning curve, Lucidpress is easy to navigate even for beginners. It offers a wide range of templates for various design needs like brochures, newsletters, and posters, making it convenient for users to start their projects.
Moreover, Lucidpress operates online, eliminating the need for software installation. This cloud-based solution allows for real-time collaboration, a feature that InDesign lacks. It facilitates team projects by enabling multiple users to work on the same document simultaneously.
Cost-wise, Lucidpress offers a free basic version and affordable premium plans, while InDesign can be relatively expensive. Therefore, for those seeking a budget-friendly, easy-to-use yet powerful design tool, Lucidpress provides an excellent alternative to InDesign.
What are the differences between Marq (ex. Lucidpress) and InDesign?
As a user of both Lucidpress and InDesign, I've noticed distinct differences between these two software. Firstly, Lucidpress is a web-based platform that allows users to create professional quality print and digital publications. It is designed to be user-friendly and collaborative, enabling multiple users to work on a project simultaneously. It is ideal for small businesses or individuals who are just starting out in design.
On the other hand, Adobe InDesign is a more advanced software aimed at professionals. It offers more complex features and tools for detailed layout and typography work. While it requires a steeper learning curve, it provides greater flexibility and control over your designs. However, unlike Lucidpress, it doesn't support real-time collaboration.
In conclusion, while both are excellent tools for designing publications, the choice between Lucidpress and InDesign largely depends on your needs, level of expertise, and whether you require collaborative features or not.

Sawyer: The Essential Software for Summer Camps and Classes
As a novice in teaching summer camps and children's classes, I am grateful for finding Sawyer. It enables me to showcase my brand professionally and is cost-effective. The software is user-friendly with a minimal learning curve. When I initiated a summer camp for kids, Sawyer simplified the process by providing all the necessary features, even those I hadn't thought of. They continue to introduce more features, especially during the pandemic when businesses had to shift to online classes. The onboarding process was uncomplicated. Both the front-end and back-end interfaces are modern and similar to Apple's design, making it easy for me and the users. Other software I tried were outdated and cumbersome. Their customer service is very supportive. I've been using the software for nearly two summers now and I can't think of anything I dislike. I do wish I could embed my Registration page on my website myself, but Sawyer does it swiftly so it's not a significant issue. I chose Sawyer for its ease of use, Apple-like.

Why is Sawyer a good alternative to InDesign?
I believe that the service Sawyer is a great alternative to InDesign for a number of reasons. Firstly, Sawyer is more user-friendly and less complex, making it an excellent choice for those who are new to graphic design or who don't need all the advanced features of InDesign. Secondly, it's cost-effective. Unlike Adobe InDesign, which can be quite expensive especially for small businesses or freelancers, Sawyer offers a more affordable pricing plan. Thirdly, it provides good collaboration features which makes it easier for teams to work together. Lastly, its cloud-based nature allows users to access and work on their designs from anywhere at any time. Therefore, for those seeking a simpler, cheaper, and more collaborative design tool, Sawyer is a good alternative to consider.
What are the differences between Sawyer and InDesign?
I have worked with both Sawyer and InDesign, and I can attest that they are different in many ways. First off, Sawyer is a business management software designed for children's activity providers. It allows businesses to schedule classes, manage enrollments, process payments, and communicate with parents. Its main focus is to streamline operations and improve customer experiences in the child service industry.
On the other hand, Adobe InDesign is a desktop publishing software used for creating layouts for print and digital publishing. It's used by graphic designers, artists, publishers, and marketing professionals to create posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers, presentations, books, and ebooks. InDesign is all about designing and layout while Sawyer is about business management. They serve different objectives and are used in entirely different industries.
