My top 3 Memberstack alternatives
By Shubhashree Halder, Content Manager
Authorize.net
When I want to accept subscription-based or recurring payments but do not have a full membership stack I use Authorize.net. This is due to the fact that I am able to establish subscription plans with Automated Recurring Billing (ARB), store credit card information by utilizing tokenized user profiles through Customer Information Manager (CIM) as well as utilize AFDS fraud detection rules prior to processing the final charge. One example of how this works is: 1) Create both a customer profile and a payment profile utilizing their API; 2) Start an ARB plan for "pro membership" within Authorize.net; 3) Listen for outcomes from transactions occurring after authorizing your customers for an account in your database. Gateway pricing is relatively straight-forward at the gateway level. There will be a monthly cost of $25 for gateway access as well as a .10/transaction gateway fee (processor fees are additional costs.)
Quickbooks Online
QuickBooks Online is what I pick when “membership” really means “billing + bookkeeping.” I can create recurring invoices, reconcile deposits via bank feeds, and keep customer balances visible without building any admin UI. The plan ladder is explicit: Simple Start ($35/month), Essentials ($65/month), Plus ($99/month), and Advanced ($235/month), with user caps commonly set at 1/3/5/25 users respectively, so I can match access to my ops reality, not my member count.
Brex
Brex wins for me when the real problem is internal spend control, not gating content. On Essentials it’s $0 user/month and includes bill pay, reimbursements, Brex API access, accounting integrations, and real-time reporting. If I need policy complexity, Premium is $12 user/month and adds multiple expense policies (category rules, role-based exceptions, auto-approval rules), dynamic expense review chains, and live budgets. I also like the workflow angle: AI can auto-generate receipts and route transactions to the right spend limits, which reduces month-end cleanup.
List of Alternatives to Memberstack
Here are some of Memberstack's top competitors in the Payments category: Authorize.net, Quickbooks Online, Brex or QuickBooks.
Authorize.net is a reliable payment gateway that enables businesses to securely accept credit card, debit card, and e-check payments online, in person, or via mobile devices. It offers robust fraud detection and seamless integrations with e-commerce platforms.

Why is Authorize.net a good alternative to Memberstack?
Authorize.net is the alternative I’d recommend to a team that has developers (or a CTO-minded builder) and wants to own the membership experience instead of adopting an off-the-shelf widget layer. If you’re building a custom app in something like Next.js, Rails, or Laravel, I find it cleaner to treat payments as infrastructure: CIM for securely storing card-on-file tokens, ARB for subscription schedules, and AFDS for rule-based fraud controls. This setup is also useful if you need to accept more than “just Stripe card payments” patterns, like adding eCheck flows, while still keeping a single gateway integration. The predictable gateway pricing ($25/month + $0.10 per transaction gateway fee, plus your processor fees) is nice when you don’t want your membership platform charging an extra percentage on top of payment processing. The tradeoff is you must implement login, roles, and gated access yourself.
What are the differences between Authorize.net and Memberstack?
Memberstack is an authentication-and-membership layer: it ties user accounts, social logins, Stripe payments, and gated-content rules into one product, and it prices by member count/revenue with plan-level transaction fees (for example, Basic is $29/month with a 4% transaction fee, while Established is $499/month with 0% transaction fees). Authorize.net is narrower and lower-level: it’s a payment gateway with developer APIs, not a user directory or access-control system. Instead of “memberships,” you implement recurring charges using ARB, store payment credentials as tokenized profiles using CIM, and reduce risk using AFDS. Authorize.net’s gateway pricing is typically a flat $25/month gateway access plus a $0.10 per-transaction gateway fee, and you still need a separate merchant account/processor arrangement for the actual card processing fees. In practice, you replace Memberstack’s billing engine, not its login/gating UI.

Seamless Accountant Access + Mobile Expense Capture
I run a small service business and QuickBooks Online fits pretty well. Sending invoices is straightforward, customers can pay online, and the dashboard gives me a quick read on cash flow. I do wish some reports were easier to customize, but for day to day bookkeeping it does the job well

Why is Quickbooks Online a good alternative to Memberstack?
QuickBooks Online is a strong alternative for a small business owner, operator, or bookkeeper who cares about clean financials more than on-site gating. If your “membership” is essentially monthly retainers, coaching packages, or subscription invoices, I like that QuickBooks keeps everything in one accounting system: recurring invoices for predictable billing, expense tracking, and bank feed reconciliation so deposits and payouts aren’t a spreadsheet project. The tiering can also match how you work internally: Simple Start at $35/month is a solo baseline, Plus at $99/month is where inventory/purchase-order style workflows typically make more sense, and Advanced at $235/month aligns with having a real finance team (and the much larger user cap). You still need a separate access layer for your site, but QuickBooks becomes the system of record for “paid vs. overdue.”
What are the differences between Quickbooks Online and Memberstack?
Memberstack is built around users logging in and unlocking pages, components, and data based on membership state. QuickBooks Online is built around a general ledger, invoices, bills, and reconciliation, so it can tell you “who owes what” and “what cleared the bank,” but it won’t restrict a Webflow page or issue an auth session. Pricing also maps differently: Memberstack’s tiers are tied to member count and include transaction-fee percentages (4% on Basic, then down to 0.9%, then 0% on the highest tier), while QuickBooks Online is a company subscription with tiered features and user limits (commonly 1 user on Simple Start, 3 on Essentials, 5 on Plus, 25 on Advanced). If I try to “swap” Memberstack for QuickBooks, the realistic approach is: use QuickBooks for recurring invoices, bookkeeping, and reporting, then push “paid/unpaid” status into my app via integrations so my app decides who gets access.

QuickBooks Sync + Receipt Matching for Faster Close
We switched to Brex mainly for spend controls, but I ended up liking the accounting side just as much since the QuickBooks sync and receipt matching cut down our month-end cleanup quite a bit
May 30, 2026
Why is Brex a good alternative to Memberstack?
Brex is the alternative I reach for when the pain is uncontrolled tool spend, employee card usage, and messy month-end expense cleanup, problems Memberstack doesn’t try to solve. For a finance lead or ops manager, Essentials at $0 user/month is a low-friction entry point that still includes bill pay, reimbursements, accounting integrations, real-time reporting, and API access. When a company starts scaling, Premium at $12 user/month is where the policy toolkit becomes the real value: multiple expense policies with category rules, role-based exceptions, auto-approval rules, dynamic review chains, and live budgets. I also like the automation angle for distributed teams: AI-generated receipts and routing to the correct spend limit means fewer “who paid for this?” threads at the end of the month. It’s not a membership product, but it’s a better control plane for internal recurring subscriptions and procurement.
What are the differences between Brex and Memberstack?
Memberstack sits on the customer side: sign-up, login, Stripe-backed subscriptions, and front-end access control (including social logins and options like Custom SSO on higher tiers). Brex sits on the employee/finance side: corporate cards, expense management, bill pay, reimbursements, and policy enforcement. The pricing model reflects that: Brex Essentials is $0 user/month, Premium is $12 user/month, and Enterprise is custom, whereas Memberstack starts at $29/month and scales with member count/revenue and transaction fees. Feature-wise, Brex gives me policy mechanics like category rules, role-based exceptions, auto-approval rules, dynamic review chains, and live budgets; it also automates capture (AI-generated receipts and routing to spend limits). None of that creates a member login or gated-content rules. So Brex only “replaces” Memberstack if what you truly need is spend governance around subscriptions/tools, not a membership portal.
