01 Is n8n any Good? My expert Review

I have been working with n8n for nearly eight months, and it has significantly changed how I manage repetitive tasks within my daily workflow. At the start, I liked the fact that n8n is self-hosted so I am able to store all customer information securely on my servers as opposed to passing it through third-party infrastructure as would be required by Zapier.

A good example of how much time I saved (in terms of hours) by automating a routine part of my daily workflow with n8n; was when I automated our customer onboarding process. After a client completes our TypeForm, n8n will create a new page in Notion with their personal contact and business details, send a personalized "Welcome Email" to the client via SendGrid, add the client to our Slack Channel, and lastly, create a new task in ClickUp for our internal team to follow-up with the client. To set up this process took me approximately two hours, however, since then it has run flawlessly without any additional interaction from myself.

As great as n8n is, the learning curve is definitely steeper than other automation products I have used in the past. At the beginning, the interface can appear very complex and even intimidating if you are not familiar with web development concepts such as HTTP requests or JSON formatting. I remember spending an entire frustrating afternoon trying to decipher the data received via a webhook until I finally understood how the expression editor functioned.

Although the community forum was very helpful, I also appreciated the fact that n8n is open source. As such, there is typically another user who has solved the exact problem you are currently experiencing. Considering the cost of n8n, particularly the self-hosted free version, I believe that the amount of time you spend learning n8n is well worth the investment of time to become proficient with n8n.

02 Pros and cons from reviewers

Pros from reviewers

  • Open-Source Flexibility
n8n provides complete transparency and customization options, allowing developers to modify the source code, self-host the platform, and maintain full control over their automation workflows without vendor lock-in

  • Cost-Effective Automation
With a fair-code distribution model and generous free tier, n8n enables businesses to automate complex workflows without the hefty subscription fees typical of proprietary alternatives, making enterprise-grade automation accessible to startups and SMBs

  • Extensive Integration Library
The platform offers 400+ pre-built nodes connecting popular apps and services, from CRM systems to databases and APIs, enabling seamless data flow across your entire tech stack without writing complex code

  • Visual Workflow Builder
n8n's intuitive drag-and-drop interface makes automation accessible to both technical and non-technical users, allowing teams to design, test, and deploy sophisticated workflows through an easy-to-understand visual canvas

  • Advanced Technical Capabilities
Unlike simplified automation tools, n8n supports JavaScript code snippets, custom functions, complex data transformations, and API calls, providing the power and flexibility that technical teams need for sophisticated automation scenarios

Cons from reviewers

  • Cloud Version Limitations
The cloud-hosted version of n8n comes with execution limits and higher costs for advanced features, while the free self-hosted version requires significant technical investment to maintain and scale

  • Steep Learning Curve
n8n requires technical knowledge and understanding of APIs, webhooks, and workflow logic which can be challenging for non-technical users or beginners without coding experience

  • Limited Pre-built Templates
Compared to competitors like Zapier or Make, n8n offers fewer ready-to-use workflow templates, requiring users to build most automations from scratch which increases setup time

  • Self-hosting Complexity
While self-hosting provides control, it demands server management skills, regular maintenance, security updates, and infrastructure knowledge that many small businesses lack

  • Smaller Community and Resources
As a newer platform, n8n has a smaller user community, fewer tutorials, limited third-party integrations, and less extensive documentation compared to established automation tools

04 How n8n compare to similar software?

The most basic way to look at this is this: Clay is optimized for "who to contact and what to say," while n8n is optimized for "what should happen in the middle between systems."

Clay will do better on any process that has a starting list (raw leads, target accounts, inbound signups) and the subsequent action requires context, role verification, company signals, clean segmentation fields, and personalized messaging angles. This makes sense economically for Clay, since the expensive part is the enrichment itself; you're essentially paying for access to data providers.

Additionally, Clay is very clear on what actions cost credits vs. what actions are free, so teams can design workflows without accidentally burning budget.

n8n is an automation canvas. You use it to connect tools, move data, create operational guardrails, deduplication rules, routing, retries, error notifications, cross-tool synchronization, etc. If self-hosting is required, or if you want to treat automation like internal...

The difference between make and n8n can be described as follows: Make will help get visual automation up and running faster than n8n; n8n will help create a system that will allow ops teams to automate workflows with a high level of control and flexibility.

If you are looking to let your ops team get an automation up and running fast and easily maintainable, use make. Using make allows you to build multi-step workflows with routing, filtering, transformation, and integrating without creating a "mini-software project".

If your workflows have characteristics similar to those of systems integration, internal api's, custom authentication, private networks, strict governance and/or complex failures then n8n will most likely be your best choice. n8n is often selected by tech teams due to its ability to offer greater flexibility and a variety of privacy options through self-hosting.

If you've ever thought "we want our automation to be versioned, audited, and deployed as we would a piece of...

The simplest distinction is output. Lovable's output is a full-stack application (pages, flows, backend endpoints) with a product people can use. The output of n8n is a workflow graph made up of triggers and actions which will move data, call APIs, and execute business logic automatically.

The main reason for this difference in output is the type of user who will be purchasing each solution. Founders will typically purchase Lovable as it is primarily a "founder" tool or "product acceleration" tool. It is ideal when the bottleneck is building the user interface and connecting the parts of the application so they can collect data about their users' behavior to improve their product. Ops teams will typically purchase n8n as it is typically an "ops backbone". It is ideal when the bottleneck is operational throughput, lead routing, enrichment, notifications, provisioning, data synchronization, and multi-tool processes that need to run reliably in the background.

Lovable will grow as you...

The best automation tool for client work

n8n has become a core part of how I deliver client projects. The visual workflow builder lets me prototype fast, show clients exactly what’s happening in their automations, and iterate without starting over. Self-hosting gives me full control over client data, which matters when businesses care about where their information lives. The node library covers most major tools out of the box, and when a native integration doesn’t exist, the HTTP request node fills the gap. If you build automations for clients and want flexibility without ballooning costs, n8n is the strongest option I’ve found.

Execution history and pinned data speed testing

We started on a trial and then found a 14-day access plus 17% off the yearly option through Joinsecret, which made it easier to justify. Price aside, the part I value is that workflows do not feel boxed in, especially when you need custom code next to standard integrations

    Custom code alongside standard integrations

n8n has been good for connecting internal tools that most automation platforms ignore. We use webhooks, cron triggers, and a few custom JS steps to sync data between our product database and support platform. The editor can get busy on larger workflows, but sub-workflows help keep things readable

Great tool - but the deal only works for their hosted plans

n8n is a great tool to create automations workflows for your business. With all the available nodes, you can automate nearly anything. It IS an advanced too and many workflows need to be built from scratch, compared to similar tools like Zapier where they handle much of the details for you when connecting tools. But this deal is for n8n's hosted plans. You can actually host n8n on your own server with their self-hosted option which is "free" as you only pay for the server hosting and usage instead. Again, that is an extra step for advance users, so if you aren't great with tech then n8n might not be best for you. Although LLMs have gotten much better at building and troubleshooting n8n workflows, which has made the tool more accessible.

Strong for internal and overlooked tools

I like that n8n does not force you to choose between low-code and code. A marketing teammate built the first version of a campaign routing workflow, then I added expressions and a custom API call when requirements got more specific. That handoff worked better than I expected

    Finance automation that eliminates copy-paste

We run n8n on our own server and that alone changed the conversation internally. Legal had concerns about sending user events through third-party automation tools, and n8n let us keep the workflows in-house while still giving the team a low-code builder. Setup was straightforward, and updates have been manageable

    Great fit for non-linear processes

I came across a 2-week free period and 17% annual savings via Joinsecret when we were comparing tools. Nice perk, but what kept us on n8n was the debugging experience. Being able to inspect each node output and rerun from the failure point is genuinely helpful when you're maintaining production automations

Conditional logic and error handling that actually works

If you have a process that is not perfectly linear, n8n is a solid fit. Our finance workflow pulls invoice data from email, normalizes it, posts it to our accounting system, and flags exceptions in Airtable. It took some trial and error, but once it was stable, it replaced a lot of copy-paste work

    Non-developers build, developers fine-tune

I picked n8n because of the flexibility, and it has mostly delivered. The AI node support is useful, but honestly the bigger win for us is the conditional logic and error handling. We built a support triage flow that checks urgency, tags tickets, and routes edge cases to a human instead of forcing everything through a brittle automation

    May 6, 2026

  • Ardella Bogan DDS

Self-hosted security with niche API flexibility

I was surprised by how usable n8n is for non-developers. Our ops person builds the basic flows, and I step in only for the occasional expression or webhook tweak. The execution history and pinned data save a lot of time when you're testing a workflow with several branches
