01 What is Dify?

Dify can be seen as an operating system for LLM-powered applications. Instead of isolated prompts or scripts, it provides a structured environment for managing models, data, workflows, and agents in one place. The platform is open-source, which gives teams control over deployment, security, and customization. With visual orchestration, built-in RAG tooling, and production-ready APIs, Dify helps bridge the gap between experimentation and real-world AI products. It is designed for teams that want flexibility, transparency, and a scalable foundation rather than quick, disposable demos.

02 Pros and cons from reviewers

Pros from reviewers

  • High development velocity
Dify accelerates AI development by solving common problems upfront. Teams spend less time on plumbing and more time refining user experience and business logic.

  • Open-source transparency
Access to the source code builds trust and allows deep customization. Organizations can audit behavior, extend features, or adapt the platform to internal standards.

  • Flexible deployment options
Dify supports cloud, on-premise, and hybrid setups. This flexibility is critical for industries with strict data residency or compliance constraints.

  • Built-in RAG tooling
Handling private data is often painful. Dify simplifies ingestion and retrieval, making it easier to build AI systems that actually understand company-specific information.

  • Growing ecosystem
An active community contributes integrations, fixes, and ideas. This reduces long-term risk compared to closed platforms that evolve behind locked roadmaps.

Cons from reviewers

  • Operational complexity
Monitoring, updates, and scaling still require ongoing attention. Dify reduces work, but it does not eliminate operational responsibility.

  • Rapid ecosystem changes
The AI landscape moves quickly, and breaking changes can happen. Teams need processes in place to manage updates safely.

  • Documentation gaps
Fast feature releases sometimes outpace documentation updates. This can slow down adoption of newer capabilities and force some trial-and-error.

  • Not beginner-focused
Dify is powerful, but not hand-holding. Non-technical users may struggle without engineering support.

  • Resource-heavy at scale
Running large workloads can be expensive. Teams need to plan compute and storage carefully, especially when scaling RAG or agent-based workflows.

Finally a serious alternative to custom LLM backends

I have built LLM features from scratch before, and it is always the same pain: prompt versions, logging, retries, monitoring. Dify gave us a proper backend out of the box. We used it to power an AI feature inside our SaaS app via API, without exposing anything to end users. It felt much closer to real software engineering than most no-code AI tools.

Open-source was a big trust factor

We work in a regulated environment, so sending data to random AI platforms was not an option. Being able to self-host Dify was a huge plus. We deployed it internally, connected it to our private data, and kept full control over access and logs.

    Perfect balance

What I really like is that Dify does not lock you into a toy interface. I used the visual workflow builder to design agent logic, but still had full control over prompts, APIs, and deployment.

Helped us ship an internal AI assistant in weeks

I used Dify to build an internal knowledge assistant for our support team. We connected our PDFs and Notion docs through RAG and had a usable tool in production in a few weeks. Without Dify, this would have meant stitching together prompts, a vector database, and custom APIs. Here, everything lived in one place, which made iteration much faster.
