      Exploring Render.com: A Developer's Learning Journey

I chose to use render.com for my project deployment, attracted by their cost-effective hosting solutions. Initially, I found the documentation for deploying apps on their platform a bit challenging to navigate. However, this pushed me to explore and learn more about the platform, enhancing my problem-solving skills. They introduced rendercli as an installation tool, which wasn't immediately recognized as an available package when I tried to install it using Chocolatey. This was an interesting surprise, as it gave me the opportunity to delve deeper into the installation process and understand it better. The community support was a unique experience. The response time was a bit slower than I expected, but this gave me the chance to independently troubleshoot and find solutions. The moderators who responded were not familiar with my preferred language, which was a great opportunity for me to broaden my knowledge and learn to communicate my issues more effectively. Despite sending multiple messages and emails, I didn't receive an immediate resolution. However, this taught me patience and persistence, and I was able to find alternative solutions. Overall, my experience with render.com was a learning curve that helped me grow as a developer.

Clarify Free Tier Terms and Enable Data Download in Render Software

The conditions of the free tier could be clearer on the pricing page, and the notifications could be better. The PostgreSQL Free tier isn't entirely free. My free DB was suspended after 9 days from the creation date and then deleted after an additional 14 days because I didn't pay. Essentially, they held my data hostage, and I couldn't even download it after the suspension. I was extremely disappointed to discover this the hard way. I acknowledge that it was my mistake for not reading all the conditions of the free plan, but it still feels somewhat like a scam. As for hosting, the free instances are suspended after a period of inactivity, similar to Heroku. Sometimes, it takes a minute or two to process a simple HTTP request after waking up, which could cause the other side to time out. This is something else to bear in mind.

      Questionable Business Model: Borderline Scam?

My experience with Render was less than satisfactory, bordering on a scam. They required my credit card details even though I intended to use the free tier. I was surprised to find that I was charged for everything when I deployed my app, resulting in a $5 bill for a simple app that used an empty Postgres DB. Even after pausing my project, I was billed an additional $2 the following month. While an experienced developer might be able to navigate the settings to stay within the free tier, Render doesn't make this the default process. Their free tier is purposefully confusing, and it seems they rely on users not digging too deep. I can't understand how they see this as a sustainable business model. I eventually moved everything to Fly.io, a platform that genuinely offers a free tier without requiring credit card information.
