My top 3 Shift alternatives
By Frédéric Laffont, Chief Technology Officer
Trello
Trello is a widely-used project management tool that helps you organize and prioritize tasks using boards, lists, and cards. Personally, I've found Trello to be a great alternative to Shift, especially if you're someone who enjoys visualizing your workflow. It's perfect for visual thinkers because you can quickly set up boards for each project, create lists to represent different stages, and add individual task cards. Plus, you can easily assign due dates, labels, and attachments to each card—making it simple to stay on top of deadlines and important details.
Basecamp
Basecamp is another great alternative to Shift that offers a comprehensive set of project management tools. I have found Basecamp to be particularly useful for teams that need to collaborate on projects in real-time. With Basecamp, I can create projects, assign tasks to team members, share files and documents, and communicate with team members through messages and comments. Basecamp also offers a calendar feature that allows me to schedule deadlines and milestones for each project.
Wrike
Wrike is a powerful project management tool that offers a wide range of features for managing projects of all sizes. I have found Wrike to be particularly useful for teams that need advanced project tracking and reporting capabilities. With Wrike, I can create custom workflows, set up dependencies between tasks, and track progress in real-time. Wrike also offers Gantt charts, time tracking, and reporting tools that help me stay on top of my projects and make informed decisions.

Trello Excels at Simplicity
Trello appears visually appealing and is very user-friendly for me. Its straightforward interface enables me to quickly grasp how to structure my tracking. However, I am not fond of the restriction on the number of custom fields. If I require custom fields now, I will likely need more in the future. I don't like being limited in the number of fields, which forces me to operate within the tool's constraints rather than my own understanding. I don't want to pay for something as basic as a field. I would prefer to be charged for baselining, enhanced reporting, or more advanced features, rather than being nickel and dimed for fields.

Why is Trello a good alternative to Shift?
As someone who has used both Trello and Shift, I find Shift to be a great alternative. One of the main reasons is its ability to integrate multiple applications into one platform. This means I can manage my emails, calendars, and tasks from different accounts all in one place. This feature significantly improves productivity as it saves time spent toggling between different apps and accounts.
Furthermore, Shift provides an intuitive and user-friendly interface. It's easy to navigate and customize according to personal preferences. The search function is also efficient, making it easier to find specific information across multiple applications. Lastly, Shift offers a unified notification center which helps me stay on top of all my tasks and updates without the need to check each app individually.
What are the differences between Trello and Shift?
Comparing these 2 applications, I can say that Shift and Trello, while both are productivity tools, serve different goals. Shift is a desktop app that allows you to streamline and manage your various email accounts, apps, and workflows in one central place. It's ideal for those who use multiple accounts and want to switch between them easily without logging in and out. On the other hand, Trello is a web-based project management tool that uses a card system for organizing tasks and projects. It's great for team collaboration as it allows you to assign tasks, add comments, and track progress.
In essence, while Shift focuses on managing your digital workspace by consolidating your accounts and apps, Trello focuses on project management and team collaboration. Both are useful tools but serve different needs depending on your workflow requirements.
Basecamp brings value by providing a centralized platform for project management, team collaboration, and communication, streamlining workflows, and improving productivity. It offers a range of tools such as to-do lists, schedules, message boards, and file sharing options that help teams to stay organized and focused, easily manage tasks and deadlines, and track progress in real-time.

Email Structure with Tags, Assignments & Automation
Front works well if your team lives in email but needs more structure. We use tags, assignments, and automation rules constantly, and the fact that conversations stay visible to the team avoids the usual “who replied to this?” confusion. We also got a better first-year annual price through Joinsecret, which was nice timing, but the product itself solved a real operational problem for us

Fast Adoption & Simple Workflow Automation
We switched to Slack from Microsoft Teams for one department and the adoption was much faster than I expected. People understood channels and reactions right away, and workflow builder has been surprisingly useful for simple request processes. It is not perfect for long-form documentation, but for day-to-day coordination it is solid

Top-notch Real-time Customer Interaction Tool
I have a highly positive view of Drift and am glad to serve my customers in real time using the Drift chat widget, which lets me qualify leads instantly. I value how Drift chat allows my customers to connect immediately within our product. If they face issues or have queries, they don't need to wait for email support; all their questions can be answered instantly within the chat. It's also handy for my teams to use the mobile app to handle customer chats from anywhere. We frequently get many questions and leads from our landing page, and Drift has assisted us in automating leads and pushing them into our CRM systems. Integrating the chat widget within the app is easy and simple. The web app (dashboard) is a bit slow to load at first, but the chat is extremely fast and reliable. I do wish they had an Android SDK to start conversations within the app. I chose Drift because it was easy to set up and for its user interface.
