Pros from reviewers

  • Easy to use: SingleStore is user-friendly and can be set up quickly, allowing for the creation of a customer-facing streaming analytics data store in a short period of time

  • Seamless integration: The software integrates well with AWS and other services, making it ideal for users who heavily use multi-petabyte S3 and large Kafka clusters

  • High performance: SingleStore provides sub-second responses even with heavy API calls, scanning billions of rows across numerous tables and applying RBAC functionalities instantly

  • Scalability: SingleStore is a distributed database that can be scaled out, unlike some fixed, vendor-maintained appliances, making it suitable for managing large data sets

  • Compatibility: SingleStore is API-compatible with the MySQL dialect, allowing users to use MySQL-targeted tools to query data on SingleStore.

Cons from reviewers

  • Lack of maturity: Despite its impressive features, SingleStore is not fully mature and lacks some administrative functions such as incremental, point-in-time, and object-specific backups and restore

  • Difficulty with complex queries and documentation: Some users have reported difficulties with executing complex queries and a lack of detailed documentation

  • High cost for self-hosted solutions: Implementing a backup on a self-hosted solution can be challenging due to the need to backup large amounts of data, making it a costly option

  • Absence of certain features: Some users have noted the absence of a dedicated client interface, built-in data modeling capabilities, and a superior front end to assist developers

  • Poor customer support: Some users have reported dissatisfaction with the customer support, finding it difficult to get on-call representative support even for high priority issues.

      Exploring SingleStore's Requested Features: A First-Timer's Experience

This review was incentivized by SingleStore, who compensated me to test features like Kafka integration, ingestion, and migration. They requested an honest review after a few hours of usage and a one-hour seminar. Therefore, my experience with the tool is limited and this review reflects my initial impressions. I was struck by the overall simplicity of the software. The guides were user-friendly and the documentation was clear. I attempted to find errors in some areas, but for example, the system doesn't reveal the password when I request it to echo back the Kafka connection details I established, which could have been a security concern. However, they were evidently aware of this and made sure it wasn't possible. I especially appreciated the extremely fast ingestion speed and the simplicity of setting up a Kafka linked table. However, I encountered some problems with the support. Despite the chat being prompt and effective, I had difficulty explaining that I wanted a copy of the "Replicate.

Exploring MemSQL: A Journey into Enterprise Data Lakes

I primarily use MemSQL, now known as SingleStore, for an enterprise data lake, which also doubles as a staging area for MemSQL data warehouses. These are currently under development and not yet in production. Overall, I am satisfied with the product and the development process is going well. I appreciate that SingleStore is a distributed database that runs on commodity hardware and can be scaled out, unlike some fixed, vendor-maintained appliances like Teradata. I find the Columnstore feature particularly valuable. However, the product is not fully mature. Despite using the MySQL protocol, it doesn't always work with MySQL-compliant products. Some administrative functions such as incremental, point-in-time, and object-specific backups and restore are lacking. Although SingleStore is making progress in these areas, there is still room for improvement. I chose SingleStore over NoSQL products like Hadoop because I wanted to leverage my existing SQL skillset. I'm not completely switching from Teradata, but I plan to use it less and SingleStore more due to frustrations.

      Supersonic DB - Exceptional Performance

I would give SingleStore a full star rating. Having worked with nearly all databases, I can confidently say it outperforms all others I've used. Its unique transformation capabilities in the LOAD command and the ability to capture errors and rejects are incredibly helpful. It's extremely fast and poses serious competition to other databases. It's a next-generation database with great potential for both on-premise and cloud use. Its high compatibility, resilience, and scalability are fantastic features. I highly recommend it to any organization looking to upgrade from outdated databases. While I don't have any specific dislikes, I would appreciate a dedicated client interface, built-in data modeling capabilities, and a superior front end to assist developers from day one. I would also like to see a proper blogging web portal to help developers resolve their queries and issues more quickly. I switched to SingleStore because other options were too expensive and difficult for developers to learn.
