01 Is AWS Activate any Good? My expert Review

As someone who has experience working through AWS Activate, I have spent a tremendous amount of time using their platform, where I have ultimately seen them become a trusted partner for startups who wish to scale. I have worked within various customer bases, building everything from a fintech startups first app to one of the largest e-commerce sites in the country, scaling to thousands of concurrent users. AWS Activate, using services like EC2 and RDS, do have reliable offerings for startups that their onboarding process is almost seamless. So, while the proverbial tidal wave was upon us, it provided some level of emergency anchoring for the startups we supported that they could bank on.

That said, there still does remain some level of cost visibility issue that seems a little foggy; for example, customers continue to get hit with surprise build time add ons like IP addresses or additional support. And then there is the initial set up experiences like Virtual Private Clouds (VPC); these were difficult to comprehend. They show up in startup workshops like IKEA directions, first frustration then wanting outcome on completion.

AWS Activate provides the reliability and performance needed for startup products at high growth stages. The learning curve and unexpected incremental billing surprises are not enough of a barrier against reliability and stability for products.

02 Pros and cons from reviewers

Pros from reviewers

  • Access to a wide range of services
AWS Activate provides access to a multitude of services such as EC2, S3, and RDS, which can be beneficial for startups and businesses looking to scale their operations

  • Potential for learning and exploration
AWS Activate offers a free tier that allows users to learn about the platform and explore its potential for hosting websites and applications

  • Powers a significant portion of the internet
Despite some negative reviews, it's undeniable that AWS powers a significant portion of the internet, which speaks to its reliability and wide usage.

  • Reliable uptime
Users have reported reliable uptime when using AWS Activate, ensuring that their services and applications remain available to their customers at all times

  • Reasonable pricing
Despite some complaints about unexpected charges, many users find the pricing of AWS Activate to be reasonable when compared to the breadth of services it offers

Cons from reviewers

  • Confusing structure and terminology
The AWS structure and terminology can be baffling for users, making it difficult to understand and use the platform effectively. This is compounded by a billing system that many find nonsensical, with charges for seemingly every feature and service.

  • Complicated and time-consuming configuration
The mandatory use of VPC for everything can be frustrating for users. It is not necessary for everyone and requires a lot of time to configure

  • Ineffective spam protection
AWS offers a spam protection feature for emails, but many users find it completely ineffective. It reportedly fails to mark any emails as spam, leading to an influx of unwanted emails

  • Poor customer service
Users have reported difficulty in contacting customer service for billing issues. The process is often described as a complicated runaround, with users being directed to different departments without resolution

  • High and unexpected costs
Many users have reported being charged for services they did not use or thought were free. This includes charges for validation regions, IP addresses, and technical support. Some users have even reported being charged after their accounts were suspended or blocked

04 How AWS Activate compare to similar software?

Snowflake and AWS (Amazon Web Services) are both formidable players in the world of cloud data warehousing and analytics. While they share common ground in providing data solutions, they have distinct differences that make them suitable for various business needs.

One fundamental difference lies in their offerings. Snowflake is renowned for its specialization in cloud data warehousing. It provides a comprehensive platform solely focused on data storage, processing, and analytics. Snowflake's architecture is designed with a multi-cluster, multi-cloud approach, offering unique features such as data sharing and a separation of storage and compute resources.

On the other hand, AWS is a comprehensive cloud computing provider that encompasses a vast array of services beyond data warehousing. Amazon Redshift, AWS's data warehousing solution, is just one piece of its extensive cloud ecosystem. AWS caters to businesses seeking not only data warehousing but also compute, storage, machine...

IBM Cloud and AWS are two of the most prominent players in the competitive landscape of cloud computing services, each offering a distinct set of features and capabilities tailored to meet the diverse needs of businesses.

One key difference between IBM Cloud and AWS lies in their approach to hybrid cloud solutions. IBM Cloud places a strong emphasis on hybrid cloud deployments, allowing businesses to seamlessly integrate their on-premises infrastructure with cloud resources. This hybrid cloud strategy enables organizations to leverage the benefits of both private and public cloud environments, ensuring flexibility, scalability, and security. In contrast, while AWS does offer some hybrid cloud solutions, its primary focus is on providing scalable and reliable public cloud services. While AWS does provide tools and services for hybrid cloud deployments, its offerings in this area may not be as comprehensive as IBM Cloud's.

Another notable difference between IBM Cloud and AWS is their...

While Google Cloud Platform (GCP), a new offering from Google, is a collection of public cloud resources that focuses on high compute products like Big Query, Amazon Web Services is an established cloud service platform providing a range of services to support all kinds of IT needs.

The foundational service offered by GCP is called Compute Engine. Similarly, AWS calls its primary service Elastic Compute Cloud or EC2. Though they use different naming conventions, both products essentially provide users with Virtual Machines (VM) that function like physical computers and run any kind of operating system and applications.

Interestingly, AWS and GCP share similarities in how they deploy and manage virtual machines. For example:

  • They allow you to customise the specifications of your VMs to fit your workload. You can select the amount of memory that suits your business needs, the number of vCPUs, the size and type of storage etc.
  • You have the freedom to install a variety of operating systems...

However, some users have reported issues with the billing system and customer support, which can be particularly challenging for startups with limited resources

Practical Startup Program With Low Friction Savings

I was skeptical at first, but AWS Activate ended up being one of the more practical startup programs we used, especially once a Joinsecret perk kicked in and reduced part of our monthly AWS spend without a lot of back and forth

Freedom to Test ECS and Automate Deploys

What I liked most was that it gave us room to test services we would have postponed otherwise, like ECS and S3 lifecycle policies, and we ended up building a cleaner deployment process because we weren’t forced into the cheapest workaround

Credits That Enabled EKS Experiments and Better Security

Good experience overall: the credits lasted long enough for us to run experiments in EKS, move logs into CloudWatch, and tighten security with Secrets Manager, and a Joinsecret route also unlocked a larger AWS credit cushion than we expected

Billing Relief + Onboarding + Architecture Flexibility

AWS Activate was worth it for the practical side alone: billing relief, decent onboarding material, and enough flexibility to try managed databases and queues before locking in a final architecture

Time to Optimize Costs and Make Smarter Infra Calls

AWS Activate did not magically solve cloud costs, but it bought us time to make better infrastructure decisions, and for a small team that matters a lot, especially when a Joinsecret connection helps trim monthly AWS charges once usage is already above the $100 mark

Smooth First Six Months on Core AWS Services

The program gave us a soft landing during our first six months on AWS, and I appreciated that it worked well with real services we were already using like Route 53, SES, and RDS instead of pushing us toward niche extras

Joinsecret Savings That Stack With Activate

We came in already spending over $100 a month, and through Joinsecret we got a noticeable discount in the 20 to 50 percent range on our AWS usage, which paired nicely with Activate while we optimized Lambda and S3 costs

Easy Activation and Big Support Boost via Joinsecret
