01 Is Microsoft PowerPoint any Good? My expert Review

Having been someone who consistently creates presentations, I have utilized Microsoft PowerPoint for a number of reasons. Chiefly among them being PowerPoint's interoperability and limited compatibility with a number of other Microsoft programs (Excel and Word for example). This has allowed me to have a smooth experience when switching workflows especially when I am creating a presentation for a professional meeting with a customer.

I have always been satisfied with PowerPoint since it is very easy to use, which has always enable me to create a presentation within presentation deadlines. Even though at times I feel limited by PowerPoint's inbuilt design templates and image editing capabilities, leading me to use other graphic software tools for images or graphics that needed editing or altering.

In general, I have always been content, and although I have minor frustrations, if I needed to rely on just one tool for building presentations PowerPoint could suffice because of its versatility, ease of use, and offline functionality.

02 Pros and cons from reviewers

Pros from reviewers

  • Versatility
PowerPoint is versatile, allowing the creation of online slideshows, clickable infographics, and the ability to embed original graphics and videos

  • Integration with Microsoft Suite
PowerPoint offers added functionality with other Microsoft services, such as saving on OneDrive cloud and importing slides into other Microsoft software like Word, and allows for collaboration with other Microsoft users on the same PowerPoint

  • Offline Use
PowerPoint allows for the creation of presentations anywhere and anytime, even without internet.

  • Universal Compatibility
Microsoft PowerPoint is the leading presentation software, ensuring that no client or venue will have issues with presentations created using it

  • User-friendly Interface
PowerPoint has a straightforward what-you-see-is-what-you-get interface, with functions neatly stored in panels and depicted with icons, making it user-friendly for both new and experienced users

Cons from reviewers

  • Difficulty with image editing
Some users find the image editing feature somewhat tedious and wish Microsoft would add an auto-align feature

  • Limited design options
Despite its wide range of features, some users find the design options for presentations to be limited and lacking in variety

  • Issues with aspect ratio
The designer tool does not work if the aspect ratio is altered, which can be problematic for users who prefer to create on a 4 x 4 scale

  • High RAM usage
PowerPoint can use a lot of RAM, which could significantly affect a computer's performance.

  • Problems with tables and graphs
Some users find the table with graphs function difficult to use and believe the integration with Excel could be improved

04 How Microsoft PowerPoint compare to similar software?

The most obvious distinction is the way to create, both of which fit within the overall process of creating a presentation. The first, and probably biggest, is the initial creative approach. A user of Gamma would follow a "draft-first" method of developing their presentation, beginning with either a prompt, an outline, or by importing existing materials into the tool. As soon as they have generated a structured deck from the input data, the tool allows users to edit the content and visual elements using AI-driven tools for content edits and theme changes. In contrast to other design tools where the focus is on manipulating the layout and location of individual items on a page, a user of Gamma will focus on the development of a cohesive story line and reducing friction in the process.

On the other hand, PowerPoint is a "build-and-polish" model of creating a presentation. Users of PowerPoint will likely construct their own manual or template based structure, and then use PowerPoint to...

Several key differences between Microsoft PowerPoint and Prezi can help you decide which tool is best for your presentation needs.

Firstly, the two platforms cater to different presentation styles. PowerPoint is a traditional, slide-based presentation tool that follows a linear progression. It is ideal for structured presentations where information is delivered in a sequential manner, such as business meetings, lectures, or training sessions. PowerPoint offers a wide range of templates, custom animations, and seamless integration with other Microsoft products, making it suitable for users who prefer a familiar, reliable format for professional presentations.

Prezi, on the other hand, is built around a more dynamic, non-linear approach to presentations. Rather than following a strict slide-by-slide structure, Prezi allows users to create a zoomable canvas, where you can move between topics in a more fluid and engaging way. This makes Prezi ideal for storytelling and interactive...
