The primary factor that I consider in evaluating my options for secure cloud-based file and folder storage, is whether the provider has technical capability of accessing your stored data. Proton Drive's response to this issue is particularly robust -- it utilizes end-to-end (or zero-access) encryption for both file contents and even file/folder names, meaning that Proton cannot view what you are storing on its servers. Additionally, Proton Drive benefits from Swiss privacy laws, which represent a significant difference vs. the U.S.-centric cloud-based storage systems.
What impressed me most is how “security” doesn’t force you into clunky workflows. Sharing is genuinely well thought out: you can publish secure links with password protection, expiration, and fast revocation, which is exactly what you want for sensitive client files or time-bound deliverables. I also like that upload size isn’t capped by an arbitrary per-file limit , it’s essentially constrained by your available storage.
From a productivity standpoint, Proton Drive appears to be developing a private workspace -- Docs was released prior to this and Sheets is now allowing for spreadsheet collaboration within the same private model as Docs. If your team requires lightweight document/spreadsheet editing and does not need to provide your data to large advertising technology companies, then this represents a compelling direction.
The trade-off is ecosystem depth. Proton Drive still offers fewer third-party integrations than Google Drive/OneDrive, and some users will notice slower sync or a learning curve when moving to privacy-first sharing controls. Also, while a free plan exists (5 GB), it’s modest compared to mainstream competitors, so many users will outgrow it quickly.
I believe that Proton Drive is ideal for individuals that value confidentiality over convenience features and the ability to integrate with other applications and services. Pricing for Proton Drive includes a free plan (5 GB), Drive Plus ($9.99/month for 200 GB), and various business plans including Professional (1 TB per user). JoinSecret's offer may allow for a better justification of the cost of the Professional plan if you are committed to using it for a full year.
User-friendly sharing controls
The platform allows you to share files and folders securely with password protection, expiring links, and instant access revocation, providing flexibility without sacrificing privacy or control.
Open source transparency
Proton Drive’s open source code is available for public inspection and is regularly audited by independent security experts, fostering trust and allowing users to verify its security claims.
No file size restrictions
Unlike many competitors, Proton Drive does not impose file size limits, making it suitable for storing and sharing large files such as high-resolution videos or extensive project archives.
Comprehensive end-to-end encryption
Proton Drive encrypts all files, file names, and metadata before they leave your device, ensuring that only you and those you authorize can access your information, even if servers are compromised.
Strong legal privacy protections
Operating under Swiss law, Proton Drive benefits from some of the world’s strictest privacy regulations, giving users added assurance that their data is legally protected from external requests.
Fewer integrations with external tools
Proton Drive’s focus on privacy means it offers fewer integrations with third-party apps and services, which may limit workflow options for users accustomed to more interconnected platforms.
Potentially slower file sharing
Due to the strong encryption and privacy measures, file sharing and synchronization may be slightly slower compared to less secure, mainstream cloud storage providers.
Learning curve for new users
Users transitioning from traditional cloud storage solutions may need time to adapt to Proton Drive’s privacy-focused features and sharing controls, especially if they are new to encrypted platforms.
No advanced productivity suite
While Proton Drive supports collaborative document editing, it currently lacks the comprehensive productivity tools and integrations found in some larger cloud storage ecosystems.
Limited free storage capacity
The free version of Proton Drive offers less storage compared to some mainstream competitors, which may not be sufficient for users with large storage needs and could necessitate a paid upgrade.

Privacy-focused individuals
Great for people who want zero-access cloud storage that encrypts file/folder names, plus secure sharing links, without relying on Big Tech’s data-harvesting business model.
Freelancers handling sensitive client files
Ideal for consultants, designers, and agencies who regularly send deliverables and need password-protected, expiring links with quick access revocation for safer handoffs.
Small businesses under compliance pressure
A strong fit for teams storing contracts, HR documents, or regulated data who want end-to-end encryption and Swiss legal privacy protections as baseline safeguards.
Remote teams needing private collaboration
Useful for distributed teams that want encrypted file storage plus Docs/Sheets for real-time editing, without adopting a full Google Workspace-style ecosystem.
Journalists, researchers, and activists
Well-suited for high-risk users who need strong confidentiality, open-source transparency, and secure sharing controls to reduce exposure in hostile environments.

A Separate, Vault-Like Space for Work
Proton Drive has been a good fit for storing HR and finance documents because the privacy model is stronger than what I was using before. The desktop app is simple, selective sync works well for keeping my laptop from filling up, and file recovery has been reliable in practice. It is not the most feature-packed drive on the market, but for confidential files I prefer that tradeoff

Strong Fit for HR/Finance Confidentials
We use Proton Drive in a small remote team, and the shared folders are straightforward enough that nobody needed much onboarding. Permission controls are clear, and I appreciate being able to keep everything inside the same ecosystem as Proton Mail. I also picked up a reduced rate on the business plan through Joinsecret for the first year, around a quarter off, which made testing it with the team a lot easier

Easy Team Rollout + Clear Permissions
What I like most is that Proton Drive stays focused on privacy without making everyday use awkward. The version history has already saved me twice after I overwrote a proposal, and the file request option is handy when I need clients to send material without giving them access to the whole folder. Search is decent for filenames, but I’d still like a bit more depth there

Secure Sharing Made Simple
I moved our client documents to Proton Drive mainly for the end-to-end encryption, but what kept me there is how simple file sharing is. Setting a password and expiration date on a link takes seconds, which is useful when I need to send contracts without leaving them open forever

Discount Got Me In, Security Kept Me There
I noticed Joinsecret had a 25% off Proton Drive offer and used it, and I ended up sticking around for the security model and the straightforward sharing controls rather than the discount itself

Consistent Speeds and Reliable Sync
Speeds have been solid for my day to day work, not always the absolute fastest on giant uploads but consistent, and I haven’t run into random sync conflicts

Joinsecret Discount Made Upgrading Easier
I grabbed the 25% off Proton Drive deal through Joinsecret when I was upgrading, not a huge factor but it made trying the paid plan an easier decision
