01 What is Supabase?

Supabase is a modern backend platform built entirely on PostgreSQL and open source standards. It allows developers to manage databases, authentication, file storage, APIs, serverless functions, and real-time capabilities within a single integrated system. Each project automatically generates REST and GraphQL APIs from the database schema, significantly speeding up development workflows. Supabase also includes pgvector support for AI applications, enabling embeddings to be stored directly inside Postgres. Unlike many competing platforms, everything remains portable and self-hostable, which makes it especially attractive to startups, product teams, and experienced full-stack developers who want both development speed and long-term infrastructure control.

02 Pros and cons from reviewers

Pros from reviewers

  • Open source foundation reduces long-term risk
Because Supabase is fully open source and self-hostable, teams avoid depending entirely on one provider's pricing, roadmap, or infrastructure decisions. That flexibility matters as products scale and technical requirements evolve.

  • Auto-generated APIs save substantial development time
REST and GraphQL APIs become available automatically from the database schema, reducing repetitive backend boilerplate work and accelerating the path from database design to working application functionality significantly.

  • Real-time functionality works immediately
Developers can add live updates, collaborative features, and event-driven interfaces without setting up additional messaging infrastructure or configuring complex WebSocket services independently from the rest of the backend stack.

  • Strong balance between convenience and control
Supabase delivers managed backend simplicity while still exposing direct database access, SQL tooling, and infrastructure flexibility. Developers avoid feeling boxed into overly abstracted or restrictive platform conventions.

  • Excellent fit for modern AI applications
The built-in vector toolkit powered by pgvector makes Supabase particularly attractive for AI-powered products. Teams can manage embeddings, application data, and authentication together without introducing unnecessary architectural complexity.

Cons from reviewers

  • Row-level security policies can become difficult
RLS policies are powerful but sometimes challenging to debug and maintain as applications grow. Developers without strong Postgres experience may accidentally introduce confusing permission behaviour or performance issues over time.

  • Dashboard performance slows on larger projects
As database size and project complexity increase, parts of the visual dashboard can feel sluggish. Many experienced teams eventually move toward direct SQL workflows and CLI tooling for daily operations.

  • Edge functions may experience cold starts
Latency-sensitive applications occasionally encounter cold start delays on infrequently used edge functions. Developers building highly responsive systems may need additional architectural planning around these performance patterns.

  • Mobile tooling is less mature than Firebase
Although Supabase supports mobile frameworks well, Firebase still offers a broader ecosystem of deeply integrated mobile tooling and SDK capabilities developed over a much longer period of time.

  • Self-hosted deployments require ongoing maintenance
Running Supabase independently means handling updates, monitoring, scaling, backups, and service reliability internally. Teams without dedicated infrastructure expertise may underestimate the operational workload involved with self-hosting successfully.

04 How Supabase compare to similar software?

Auth0 and Supabase are both used for authentication and identity management but serve different needs. A simple way to look at this is Auth0 is for Identity and Supabase is a Product Platform. If you need to manage Identity (across environments and/or customers) then Auth0 has the most robust feature set. If you have a core business that is to develop an application that will use a server (backend), then you should be looking at Supabase to get you up and running faster than having to string multiple services together.

When using Auth0 you are purchasing a mature Identity Access Management (IAM) layer, configured login flows, standardized tokens for all users, enterprise level connectors, and tiered security controls. In addition to the Identity features Auth0 has promoted their developers towards creating "Actions" (the new single extensibility layer) and deprecating Rules and Hooks, which is an important consideration when you inherit older Auth0 tenants or legacy code. 05 Who is Supabase best for according to our reviewers?

  • Full-stack developers building production applications
Supabase suits developers who want authentication, databases, APIs, and storage ready immediately without spending days configuring backend infrastructure manually before actual product development can even begin properly.

  • Startups trying to move quickly without infrastructure overhead
Small product teams can launch applications faster by relying on Supabase's managed backend services rather than hiring dedicated infrastructure engineers during the earliest stages of product development and validation.

  • Teams building AI-powered applications
Developers creating AI search, recommendation systems, or retrieval-augmented generation products benefit from pgvector integration, allowing embeddings and relational data to live together inside the same Postgres environment.

  • Developers migrating away from Firebase
Supabase appeals strongly to teams wanting Firebase-like convenience while avoiding proprietary databases and vendor lock-in. The transition feels familiar while offering significantly more flexibility and database portability long term.

  • Engineers comfortable working directly with SQL
Developers who already understand Postgres and relational databases gain access to advanced SQL functionality without sacrificing modern backend convenience features like authentication, storage, real-time updates, and serverless infrastructure.
