01 Is Squarespace any Good? My expert Review

Squarespace is a robust platform that's easy to use and intuitive if you want to launch a great website quickly. For example, producing a website for a local bakery/joint was easy with the drag-and-drop. It was very nice not to deal with any headaches or steep learning curves. The additional selling tools like ecom features and available financial dashboards simplified setting up working artist's stores online without any plugins or technical gimmicks.

On the other hand, when I was working through a project with a creative agency, we found Squarespace templates to be slightly restricted based on customization. Even though the templates (from what I found) are stylish and responsive, Squarespace templates are sometimes not flexible enough to allow the level of customization desired without a good deal of additional coding. And while it has improved, Squarespace will often require a bit more effort for increased SEO rank than a preferred web-builder in its space.

Regardless, Squarespace is perfect if you're a small business, or freelance artist and want an attractive website that is relatively easy to manage without technical details.

  • Ease of use
Squarespace is user-friendly and intuitive, with drag and drop features that make setting up and maintaining a website a breeze

  • Built-in features
Squarespace provides reliable built-in features, eliminating the need to deal with plugins, updates, and other issues that come with other platforms

  • Time-saving
Squarespace allows users to quickly set up a professional, clean, and easy-to-navigate website, saving time and effort

  • Mobile-friendly templates
Squarespace offers a range of mobile-friendly templates, making it a suitable choice for those without any prior web development knowledge

Cons from reviewers

  • Not ideal for SEO
Squarespace websites can struggle to rank on the first page of Google search results, which can limit their visibility and reach

  • Limited creative templates
While Squarespace offers a range of templates, they are not as diverse or creative as some users might like. This can make it more difficult for websites to stand out without additional effort

  • Limited software and service integration
The number of software and services that can be integrated with Squarespace is limited, which can restrict the functionality of websites built on the platform

  • Difficult to migrate
It can be challenging to migrate from Squarespace to another website development platform, which can cause issues for users who want to switch providers

  • Costly
Some users find Squarespace to be more expensive than other website development platforms, which can be a barrier for those on a tight budget.

04 How Squarespace compare to similar software?

The simplest way to differentiate between Google Workspace and Squarespace is based on the "job to be done".

Google Workspace facilitates a team to produce and collaborate on work-related items (email, calendar, meetings, documents, etc.) as well as provide shared storage with governance. Squarespace assists businesses to publish and sell products online via an aesthetically pleasing website which includes basic functionality to show their offers, collect lead information and perform simple ecommerce functions. These differences can be identified through workflows used daily.

The typical workflow within Google Workspace would include scheduling a meeting using the Calendar application, then attending the meeting via Meet; drafting documents using Docs; tracking data within Sheets; storing documents within Drive; and managing permissions to those stored documents via the Admin Console.

This process, when well-organized and set-up will help eliminate unnecessary operational friction...

Wix and Squarespace are two leading platforms in the website-building industry, offering a breadth of features that allow users to create and manage their online presence effectively. Both services provide an array of design templates, drag-and-drop interfaces, and a suite of tools to create a professional-looking website. However, their approach to site creation and user experience presents distinct differences that are crucial for prospective users to consider.

The primary distinction lies in the degree of customization and control over the design process. Wix is known for its highly flexible editor, granting users the freedom to position elements anywhere on the page, which can be especially advantageous for those with a specific vision for their site. This unstructured approach allows for a high level of customization, including a vast library of apps and features that can be integrated into the site. Wix also offers an Artificial Design Intelligence (ADI) option, which can...

Webflow and Squarespace are relatively similar. They offer an easy-to-use website building tool, managed hosting, ecommerce features, and they’re similarly priced.

But while you can build beautiful sites with both, Webflow is made for slightly more experienced users. Its interface can be daunting for a beginner, and you can use it to customize sections of your site to a higher extent.

For example, you get more control over a page’s containers, the size of elements, and more. You can even add your own snippets of code, making Webflow a great choice for designers that know their CSS, but don’t want to bother building something from scratch.

Squarespace also offers decent customization options. But it doesn’t give you as much control as Weblflow.

Instead, you’ll rely on their over 100 beautiful templates to create a site with pre-made blocks. While this process can seem limiting for experienced users, it’s perfect for beginners that want to create a simple portfolio or...

Squarespace is a great platform for photographers to showcase their work, thanks to its user-friendly interface, quick setup, and optimal display for photos

  • Small Business Owners
Squarespace is ideal for small business owners who need a reliable and easy-to-use platform to sell products, monitor orders, and track earnings, although it may not be the best for search engine optimization

  • Designers
Squarespace is a suitable choice for designers who appreciate its simplicity and dependability, and the opportunity to enhance its functionality by learning and applying custom CSS, despite some limitations in customization

  • Web Developers
Squarespace is a favorite among web developers for its ease of use, powerful integrations, and design flexibility, although some features may require custom code

  • Retail/Wholesale Store Owners
Squarespace may not be the best choice for retail/wholesale store owners due to issues with the search function and difficulties in domain transfer.

    Member Areas for Simple Courses

I helped a friend launch an online course site on Squarespace, and the member area plus gated content features were easier to configure than expected. It is not a full learning management system, so there are limits if you need advanced student tracking, but for selling straightforward digital access it did the job. We also found an extra 10 percent reduction on plans through Joinsecret, which was a welcome extra

    Polished Service Business Toolkit

Squarespace works well for service businesses that need a polished site without a developer on standby. I have used the appointment booking, FAQ sections, and announcement bar, and all of them were simple to launch. The tradeoff is that deep customization can be limiting unless you are comfortable with custom code snippets, but for daily use it is very manageable

Restaurant Site Easy for Staff Updates

We switched our restaurant website to Squarespace mainly for the menu pages and online reservations links, and it has been easier for staff to update than our old setup. The interface is clean enough that non-technical people can change hours, upload seasonal menus, and update homepage banners without asking for help every time. Through Joinsecret we also got a little extra off the subscription, which was useful but honestly just a side perk

    Photography Galleries That Shine

I run a photography site on Squarespace, and the gallery options are better than I expected, especially the way images scale across desktop and phone. Client proofing still requires some workaround if you need something very specialized, but for showcasing finished work it looks professional with minimal effort. The domain and SSL setup were also painless

    Clean Blogging Without Plugins

What sold me on Squarespace was the blogging setup and how clean posts look out of the box. Categories, scheduling, and basic SEO settings are easy to manage, and I did not need to chase down extra plugins for simple things like redirects or social previews. I also ended up getting a small percentage off all plan options via Joinsecret, which made the annual subscription easier to justify

    Fast Event Landing Page Builder

I built a landing page for a local event on Squarespace and was surprised by how quickly I could get from blank page to something publishable. The newsletter block, event-style sections, and form builder covered most of what I needed without outside tools. It can feel a little rigid if you want very unusual layouts, but for speed and consistency it worked well

Simple Store Setup & Smooth Checkout

Squarespace has been a good fit for our online store because product pages are easy to set up and inventory tracking is simple enough for a lean team. The checkout experience feels smooth, and the email campaign integration is handy when launching new products. I found a modest extra discount on the plan through Joinsecret, which was a nice bonus rather than the main reason we picked it

    Scheduling & Forms for Consultants

We use Squarespace for a small consulting firm and the scheduling tools plus contact forms have saved us a lot of back-and-forth with clients. I like that the templates already handle mobile layouts well, so I did not have to tweak every page separately. The only thing that took time was understanding how to structure navigation for nested pages
