01 What is Hotjar?

Hotjar is an advanced analysis tool that aids startups in enhancing their marketing strategies by analyzing website visitor behavior. Unlike other platforms that focus on numerical data, Hotjar generates heatmaps showing areas users interact with most on your site. This information helps identify friction points and improve user experience. The tool also allows for user surveys to continually refine services. It integrates with third-party software for seamless incorporation into business workflows. Used by over a million sites worldwide, including brands like Nintendo and Adobe, Hotjar is available for testing at a discounted rate through the Secret platform.

Cons from reviewers

  • Incompatibility issues
Hotjar's form tracking system is incompatible with Angular-Js websites and it doesn't display data from text fields due to GDPR guidelines

  • High cost
Hotjar has been criticized for its high pricing, especially after recent price increases, which can be a deterrent for small businesses or beginners

  • Limited session recording
Hotjar seems to miss recording organic traffic - those visitors who find the website through search engines, which can be a significant drawback for understanding user navigation

  • Poor customer service
Some users have reported issues with Hotjar's customer service, including slow response times and difficulty resolving technical issues.

  • Limited heatmap creation
Users on smaller Hotjar plans can only create three heatmaps at a time, which can feel restrictive for those who wish to set up more heatmaps and use fewer of the other available features

Replay + Feedback, Clear UX Priorities

I like Hotjar most for the combination of incoming feedback widgets and session replays, since we can watch where users hesitate and then compare that with what they wrote in the survey, which makes prioritizing UX fixes much less of a guessing game

    Click Truth via Heatmaps

Hotjar has been one of the more useful tools in our stack because the heatmaps make it obvious where people actually click versus where we thought they would, and the session recordings helped us catch a broken mobile menu that analytics alone never made clear

Perfect GA Complement with Strong Privacy Controls

Hotjar isn’t a full analytics replacement, but it complements GA really well, when numbers look weird I jump into recordings to get context, and the privacy controls plus masking options helped us stay comfortable on sensitive pages

Heatmap Comparisons Across Sites Made Affordable

Another nice surprise was the Joinsecret 40% off, it made it easier to justify rolling it out across a couple of sites, and the comparison between pages in heatmaps helped us standardize layout choices

Incoming Feedback That Surfaces Hidden UX Issues

The Incoming Feedback feature is underrated, those quick “frustrated” and “confused” votes led us straight to a form validation issue that analytics never flagged

Fast Setup, Clean Dashboard, and Internal Traffic Exclusion

The dashboard is clean and setup was painless, adding the script and verifying events took minutes, and I appreciate that I can exclude internal traffic so our team doesn’t pollute the data

    Recordings Unblocked Trial Conversion Stalls

We brought in Hotjar to understand why trial conversions were stalling, and the recordings exposed a confusing field in the form that users kept revisiting, plus we found a yearly discount via Joinsecret, so the budget conversation was easier than expected

Joinsecret Discount That Enabled Data-Driven Upgrades

We grabbed Hotjar through Joinsecret and the 40% off took the sting out of upgrading, but the real win was getting enough recordings and heatmaps to make decisions without guessing

"A powerful tool to understand your users, but not for beginners"

I've integrated Hotjar on several web projects to better understand visitor behavior, and the heatmaps and session recordings are frankly revealing. You can very quickly see where users get stuck, what they ignore, and that allows you to make really concrete UX optimization decisions rather than relying on instinct. The funnels and built-in surveys are also a good complement to go further in the analysis. Where it gets more complicated is pricing: the free plan is okay to start, but as soon as traffic rises or you want access to advanced features, the bill climbs fairly quickly and can become hard to justify for a small outfit, particularly for me who use it only for small personal projects. Luckily Secret is there hihi ! The interface is overall clean but some settings lack a bit of clarity. That said, for anyone working seriously on optimizing their site or conversion funnel, Hotjar remains one of the most insightful tools on the market. An investment that pays off quickly if you actually use it!

Funnels + Recordings to Pinpoint Drop-Off Causes

Funnels plus recordings is a solid combo, I spot the step with the biggest leak and then watch a handful of sessions from that step to see what’s actually confusing
