01 Is Jira any Good? My expert Review

After working in Jira across multiple teams, I would say it is a very versatile tool when it comes to agile project management, and that is really where the magic happens, the magic is flexibility. I have used Jira for not only software development, but also previously in marketing, customer success, and product management. For example, when I was working on a product launch that required coordination with 5 departments, I used the flexibility of Jira to develop tailored workflows and dashboards to meet the style and needs of each department.


One of the things I liked most was how it connects with the Atlassian ecosystem. For example, using Confluence and linking docs to specific issues or user stories with Jira allowed everyone to be connected directly rather than all the emails and messages bouncing back and forth.


To be fair, sometimes Jira can be intimidating—especially for new users. I have often seen onboarding take longer than expected, especially for teams who have not experienced agile or project management tools and once they get into the advanced aspects (JQL queries and dashboards), it can feel like climbing the mountain without a Sherpa guiding you.


Also, the use of add-ons can be a double-edged sword. Add-ons help to extend Jira's core functionality (i.e. time-tracking or building pretty reports) but as your teams grow, the costs can add up really quickly and in some cases, limit their ability to utilize Jira to the fullest.


All of these aside, my overall experience of using Jira has been positive. Jira's powerful task management, support for agile methodologies, and the various integrations have allowed my teams to stay organized and be successful in delivering the project on time and under budget.

    I’ve been using Jira for project management recently, and honestly, it’s just a genuinely good product. When you are managing moving parts and need to keep everything on track, having a tool that is actually useful—rather than just another administrative burden—makes all the difference. One of the biggest surprises for me was the onboarding experience. Powerful project management software usually comes with a reputation for being overly complex, but Jira actually has a very easy learning curve. It’s incredibly easy to learn and understand right out of the gate. You don't have to spend weeks reading documentation to figure out how to set up a sprint or manage a backlog; the core mechanics just make sense. A huge part of why it's so accessible comes down to the front-end experience. It features a really nice, clean user interface that gets out of your own way. I absolutely love the design and the customization options. You can tailor your boards, fields, and workflows to fit your exact operational style, rather than being forced to adapt your process to fit the software. The real magic happens when you start expanding its capabilities. Jira connects seamlessly with just about every other app you might be using. By hooking it up to the rest of your tech stack, it adds so much more functionality, turning it from a simple task tracker into a centralized hub for your entire workflow. Overall, it’s a highly effective platform that successfully balances deep customization with an easy-to-digest design. Highly recommended.

    I've found Jira's customer service to be as unique as Etsy's. They stand firm on their policies, which shows their commitment to maintaining a consistent system. The billing system is quite meticulous; if you or someone else grants a person/agent access to the sites, you need to be mindful about which specific site you're granting access to. If not, it will add to all sites and automatically adjust the plan. For example, three agents are free, but four agents will transition to the standard plan. This was a fascinating discovery when I first saw the bills and it prompted me to delve deeper into my usage history. It's quite an adventure navigating through their customer service!

    Great while inside, tough when exiting.

    I find their tools to be very good and personally, I haven't had any issues with Confluence compared to the Zendesk tools we previously used. I acknowledge that it's hard to do anything without addons, but that's becoming the norm in IT development these days. However, the problems start when you try to close your account, which is quite difficult. Thankfully, European data protection laws helped me in this case. If you're also having trouble deleting your Atlassian account because you're the billing contact for a free product, I advise you to simply write to their support and request deletion of the free trial products. After that, you should be good to go.

    I'm not sure why Jira receives so many negative reviews. In my opinion, it's a decent tool, but the problem lies in managers not knowing how to use it effectively, turning it into a tool for micromanagement. On the other hand, Confluence is an excellent collaboration tool that my team can't do without.

    Comprehensive Agile Project Management Solution

    I consider Jira an excellent all-in-one agile tool. It's user-friendly and extremely powerful. I value its numerous integrations. I've been using Jira for over 12 years and have seen its growth and enhancements. Despite some issues with billing and managing different accounts, as Bitbucket is separated, it still stands as a top product in its category. I chose Jira because it's specifically designed for Agile, unlike Click up which tries to do everything. I switched from Azure Dev ops to Jira due to the high cost and difficulty in user management.
