My top 3 Amplitude alternatives

If I’m replacing Amplitude, these three stand out because they cover the core product-analytics loop (measure → diagnose → iterate) with distinctly different approaches to data capture and pricing.
Mixpanel
When attempting to identify what causes an onboarding drop off in my users, I have found that Mixpanel’s workflow tends to be "answer first" and the process starts by using a Funnel Report where you can select your properties (i.e. plan, platform, etc., referrer). Once you've done that you can use the "save as a cohort" option to create a new cohort which will allow you to look at retention for just those users. One thing that I really like about Session Replay is how it allows me to jump from one step in the funnel directly to session replays of only those users that hit that particular funnel step. The other tools I was looking at required me to export all of the users that made it through that funnel step and then go to another tool to analyze them. Another great feature in Mixpanel are signal reports (or correlation analysis) because they help me find out if there are any patterns or trends such as "users who do X tend to retain.”
PostHog
PostHog is my pick when I want analytics plus shipping controls in the same place: Product Analytics, Session Replay, Feature Flags, and Experiments are priced separately, each with a monthly free tier. I’ve found the usage-based model handy when only one part of my stack (like replays) needs to scale while everything else stays small.
Heap
Heap wins for me in teams that hate upfront tracking plans. Once the snippet is installed, Autocapture grabs interactions (clicks, pageviews, form fills, etc.), and I can define events later in the UI without waiting on a deploy. If I’m mapping messy user paths, Journeys gives a visual path view and I can pivot into replay to see what happened at specific moments.

Why is Mixpanel a good alternative to Amplitude?
I recommend Mixpanel most often to product teams that live in “instrument → analyze → decide” cycles and want answers without writing SQL. If you’re a PM or growth lead running weekly conversion reviews, you can keep a stable set of saved reports (funnels, retention, flows) and reuse Cohorts as building blocks for segmentation. Where it really clicks for me is debugging: Session Replay is meant to be accessed from inside a Funnel or Insight so you can go from “step 3 has a 70% drop” to “show me replays of users in this exact segment.” If your org cares about identifying behaviors that predict retention or upgrades, the Signal report’s correlation angle is a concrete tool, not a vague “AI insight” promise. For teams that don’t want a bundled experimentation/CDP suite, Mixpanel stays focused and predictable.

I've been using Mixpanel for a long time without extracting much value from it. With Posthog everything is clear and immediate and it's really easy to see how users are interacting with the tool and getting value. Support is also great. Finally I have dashboards that I can act on.

I also like it for spiky workloads: usage-based pricing per product (events vs recordings vs flag requests) means I can dial up replay temporarily during a redesign without committing to a bigger annual suite tier. And if you’re in a company where procurement or security pushes back on black-box SaaS, PostHog’s open-source/self-hostable angle gives you an escape hatch, run it where you need, keep the same conceptual model, and still use the same product surface for analytics + flags.
What are the differences between PostHog and Amplitude?
Amplitude’s self-serve plans are organized around MTUs/events and bundle capabilities like product analytics, Session Replay, feature flags, Activation, and Web Experimentation into a single platform experience. PostHog feels more modular: Product Analytics, Session Replay, and Feature Flags are metered independently, each with a defined monthly free tier and a per-unit price (events, recordings, or flag requests). That changes how I budget, if I only need flags for a high-traffic app but keep analytics lean, I’m not forced into a bigger “suite” tier. Another practical difference is posture: PostHog explicitly leans into being open-source/self-hostable, which can matter when legal wants tighter control over where data and replay artifacts live, while Amplitude is typically consumed as a hosted SaaS platform with plan-based packaging.

Why is Heap a good alternative to Amplitude?
Heap is the one I reach for when the biggest risk is “we won’t track the right thing.” Non-technical product teams benefit because Autocapture collects interaction data immediately, and analysts can define events later when stakeholders finally agree on what “Activation” means. It’s also a fit for B2B SaaS where you need account-level thinking: Heap’s documentation makes it clear that account-based analysis exists (and is tier-dependent), which matches how many B2B teams actually measure adoption (multiple users contributing to one account’s conversion). On the qualitative side, Heap’s session replay capture includes things like rage clicks and JS errors, and it’s described as retroactive as long as capture was enabled, useful when you only realize you need to inspect a path after the incident.
What are the differences between Heap and Amplitude?
Amplitude and Heap can both do funnels and behavioral segmentation, but they push you toward different instrumentation habits. In Amplitude, I usually spend time deciding what events/properties matter (even if I later use feature tagging and templates), and then I rely on Amplitude’s bundled suite (analytics + flags + web experimentation + session replay) to iterate. Heap’s pitch is “capture first, decide later”: Autocapture is designed to collect broad interaction data from install onward, and I can define/label events in the UI when a question comes up. Pricing is also framed differently: Heap’s Free plan is tied to monthly sessions (up to 10k) and data history, and experience tooling like Session Replay/Heatmaps can be add-ons on higher tiers; Amplitude includes Session Replay in Starter by default.
